"The state of Hawaii Employees' Retirement System, which provides retirement benefits for state and county government employees, suffered no impact, said Rod June, chief investment officer."

Thank you trustees! Here is another reason why an employee retirement trust NOT controlled by management (and thus also protected from corporate raids) is better than company plans and IRA/401ks. While our retirement system will logically sustain losses in during the current depression, it will survive for the long haul. The State has attempted to gain control of this pot money, but it belongs to the workers who earned it as a part of their payment package.

What if the Bush cronies had succeeded in privatizing Social Security and everyone was invested in Wall Street and this sucker ponzi scheme? Yikes!

The Madoff episode speaks of greed unbridled. The S.E.C. needs to be retoothed. For an existential perspective let's all start a world wide interest in The Free Flow Philosophy,a manusript by Virgil Hess.Let's see if internet interest will bring this treatise into the public domain.Talk it up on your message boards.

Madoff is but a single face in a system rigged to seperate average Americans from their money. Individual investors got screwed over royally by rampant GREED on Wall Street. Tell the average Joe who've seen their investment portflios sink by 40% or more that they haven't been screwed. No impact on Hawaii? Think again - there's thousands of Madoffs still out there and we got screwed by at least one of them.

During the last few decades of one's life,
the value of a year outside of a jail should be
even greater. Throw the old con men into prison
and let them suffer, while thinking about the
thousands of elderly they've devastated horrendously.Never mind about the white collar
country club prisons like Milken had attended.
Vile and repugnant system!

someone was saying that a huge amount of the fraud has been committed by jews. If that is true, I am sure it is not representative of them as a whole.

Erika Engle splendidly localized bad-guy Madoff's story. She quotes local analyst Randy Havre whose friends "have now split proceeds between four different money managers." "Between" refers to two parties..."among" is for two or more. Evidently two of the four parties got the shaft is the implication of Havre's remark. Nice pick up, Ms. Engle. You have this spokesperson sharpshooting with solecisms. I enjoy your work.

Hawaii was untouched because the Jewish community is small. More Jews per capita in an area equals more of Madoffs victims. He ripped off his own people.
