It is for the record a tax advance on next year's taxes (i.e. your refund will be smaller) than a tax rebate as they try to pass it off as being. Whether or not it will stimulate the economy, I doubt it. About as much as a naked woman stimulates a 80 year old man in a coma.

Speaking of which check this out:

I am using my money to do two things - pay down a small amount of debt and then put the rest away for savings (for the future). I've heard a number of analysts indicate that this package really won't have much of an impact on things, and generally I agree with them. It's too small, borrows from money that is ours to start with and really just exacerbates the root cause of a lot of what's put into this mess to start with (leveraging our future with an immediate boost).
Paying back debt with it seems a logical choice to me. At the very least, we're removing some of the personal leveraging that we've done against our futures. Now, if we could just get the government to live within their means. Just a thought...

if you filed your income tax this year and you did not calim yourself and your partents claimed you cause you still live at home,YOU OR YOUR PARTENTS do not get anything because you are over 17 and still in school. but who know a college student that dont need money to pay off school loans or even buy books.even though we are going to school to better ourselves and our country, the GOVERNMENT does not see fit to help us. in turn hurting our eduction ,patriotism, country, and most of our wallet.

And I'm constantly amazed at the number of grammatically illiterate people there are in this world (including "This just in")who don't know when and/or how to use a period, a comma or a semi-colon in a paragraph. And, by the way,you ended that long, long, long sentence with a preposition! Shame on you.
You sound like a teacher! I date a teacher and get more texts durring a day than I care to get. People like that is why we cant spell good or put our periods where they belong!

To quote Ron White, "The next time you have a thought, let it go."

I am all for education, but you've got to learn something while you're there. I would suggest that you go back home, or to the dorm, or wherever, and do you homework and read your textbook, and then write your paper. Or do your math problems, or do anything related to bettering yourself. Read a good book on writing. Read any book. Come back and post when you're ready to form an actual sentence. If you get a rebate check, invest it into some good books or tutoring sessions.

To the person that got an uneven number- that is because it is in part based on your tax liability for 2007. Part of the amount you get back is equal to what your tax liability was, Yours is slightly less because of a lesser tax liability. If that makes sense.

This check will not affect our income tax refunds for 2008. That is a misconception.

Also there is a chart that lists when you will get your money based on the last 2 digits of your social security #.

What a ruse. The government loans us some of our own money back as a stimulus. Sadly, too many people don't understand that this will be taken back by the government in increased tax collections in the next year or so.
It was our money to begin with, folks. This isn't some sort of benevolence by a wealthy person to us. It was the federal government giving back our own money that was withheld from our paychecks.
If people are smart, they will take this money and put it toward their current debts to get ready for when the IRS comes back later with their hand out to get it back in subsequent tax years.
Or, I suppose, they could just be ecstatic about getting several hundred dollars now and then feign ignorance in the coming days, when the flow reverses and it goes back to Washington.
If Washington really wanted to stimulate the economy, they would eradicate the earmarks in legislation and reduce the size of government, whereby our taxes could be decreased in the coming years.
Obviously, most people either don't realize that they work about the first 5 months of the year to pay taxes, before they ever really realize any money for themselves or their family, or they buy into the big nanny government that is going to cure all of their ills.
Really, how many things can you name that the federal government does well?
Collect taxes.

I believe every American should send this money back to the Government to pay down the debt. This is nothing more than what so many people are doing now - spending more than they make or can afford. Bad decision to borrow money to make everyone feel good!

How to spend your money wrote:
The federal government is sending each and everyone of us a $600.00 rebate.
If we spend that money at WALMART, the money will go to CHINA.
If we spend it on gasoline it will go to the ARABS.
If we purchase a computer, it will go to INDIA.
If we purchase fruits and vegetables, it will go to MEXICO,HONDURAS,and GUATEMALA.
If we use it towards the purchase of a good car, it will go to JAPAN.
If we purchase useless crap, it will go to TAIWAN...and none of it will help the AMERICAN ECONOMY.
The only way to keep the money here at home is to buy prostitutes and beer, since these are the only products still produced in the USA.
Thank you for your help & please support the USA.

I am curious if anyone knows, what if you filed at H & R Block, and they did it electronically? We got one of those HR block cards and had the money put on that.

Just wondering how we will get our stimulus package?

No - check it out on www.irs.gov . This money is NOT income to you and can not be claimed on your 2008 taxes. Says so in black and white on their web page.

Not sure what happened with your cousin.....but I feel certain there's more to his higher tax bracket story that he failed to tell you.
