Company changing 401k services

My company is changing 401k service providers. I like the holdings I have with the original provider. I have been told that since I am 55 I can take a portion out of the original funds, convert them to an IRA and keep them from moving to the new provider during the trustee to trustee transfer. I am not leaving my employment. Is the advice legit, if so what is the formula and the specific loop hole?
