The commission in charge of the memorial to President Dwight D. Eisenhower will unveil its preferred design for the National Eisenhower Memorial, which is to be built on a four-acre plot at the base of the U.S. Capitol.
Ok here's my idea. I know a guy who melts metals and makes art for people with it. We get a Texas foundry (he was born in Texas) to melt down enough auto bumpers (preferably Lincoln town car bumpers like the ones on Ike's car. Using bumpers from the cars of his birth and death year would be good.)- and have a giant purified steel sword forged with its haft sculpted in Ike's likeness holding a baby. It should be made long enough to hit bedrock and leave enough hilt to tower over people. And buried in the center of a black pebbled elevated plaza with rose bushes reminscent of the King Arthur legend and at the top of a low hill planted with patches of vegetables and flowers with walking paths and landscaped buried bathrooms and landscaped benches around fountains and quiet ponds that start at the top and waterfall to each lower pond until the water reaches the base of the hill ponds is and is pumped back to the ring of ponds at the top. Obviously Ike stood for peace through strength and my Ike memorial would honor all three. He was a steel weapon guarding bountiful America. His bio and some of his sayings could be etched into the steel at eye level. Surrounding the metal blade could be a belt-level white marble sheath dozens of people could sit on. In winter buried muffled air compressors could keep the ponds open enough that waerfalls would freeze in formations that could be spectacularly lit at night with colored lights. The sword would be lit to shine at night too, of course.
Gehry's university building in Minnesota looks like a tin Frankenstein squatting on the west bank of the Mississippi river. I prefer architects whose asthetics work with nature like Wright. You could save this project by promoting my idea or a better one, although I'd be very surprised if a better one exists. I will of course want due credit and the commission, although I might be inclined to share it with you if you're instrumental in getting my memorial built. Maybe you could use your forum to have architects judge a reader submission contest. If you do, consider this my entry.
Ok, ok.....calm down a little, ya looney.
