Tourism secretary visits Silver City area

Apr 14, 2011 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Silver City Sun-News

As the Silver City area continues its cleanup and recovery from the Quail Ridge Fire, which burned 1,800 acres south of town in March, town officials, residents and the New Mexico Tourism Department want everyone to know that Silver City is open for business and that all planned events and activities are on schedule.

As long as she overlooks the trash, tunes out the gun shots and doesn't speak to the locals, she might be dumb enough to think this is a safe place to visit.

Here's an idea. How about figuring a way to get Snookie or Kim Kardashian out here for some lame reason or another? Those 2 could attract plenty of crowds. Beef up the economy here for a day or two. How about appealing to the networks for an appearance on a reality tv show? People could come to Silver as part of the show. Or maybe even host the place for a reality tv show. There's a lot of really different kinds of ways to attract money and tourists to this town if folks think outside the box. Just living here is actually a Reality show.

Actually if you want to take out of towners to see Gila for an easy hike, scenery to photograph and a history of the Mogollon cliff dwellings, Silver City is a good anchor for meals and the historic downtown is something to explore. The tourism office near the river and old cabin has the most helpful staff if you want some input on where to go. From EP or LC it is a long day trip to do all of this. Staying over to enjoy breakfast at a cafe, go browse an antique store or get in a bike ride can give a couple more time to share the experience. And the riverwalk is too lovely to skip also.

Should people come to NM to just see SC? No. But it has a listing in the Lonely Planet guides and it is worth the drive if you are visiting southern NM and are curious about what is off the main drag. In my book it offers more than Cloudcroft.
