Yellowstone’s Supervolcano Belly Rumbling

There are 1 comment on the Free Republic story from Feb 5, 2014, titled Yellowstone’s Supervolcano Belly Rumbling. In it, Free Republic reports that:

A seismometer inside a borehole at Yellowstone National Park has begun reporting staggering underground activity near the southwest corner of Yellowstone Lake, possibly signaling the beginning of an eruption of the Super Volcano at the Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone National Park is home to many beauties, with it's ancient landscape, ... Would like to see another big phreatic explosion,(Yellowstone lake has a few craters under it already).

This is likely a result of the 1700AD cascadia earthquake that relaxed the crust of the basin & range (WNW vector) with its largest runout through central Oregon through the Colorado hotspot, New Madrid & Charleston & eventually S. of Bermuda. Nowadays the crust N of Colorado is tightening up a bit & as a result the relaxed Yellowstone basin is starting to updome.

As the lid over the Yellowstone residual magma chamber is plastic, the surface cracking is in the hydrothermally cooled sector. Yellowstone lake is however fairly recent so the lake & margins has thicker crunchier crust than under the resurgent dome.

Fun & games bit comes a lot later when the new ascending pluton under Mt Washburn (NE rim) which is at mid crustal depths breaks into the main residual magma. Will see that one coming rather easily as it will be preceded by a major updoming event that transfers the residual magma en masse in a slow flow down to the SW rim area, probably also involving dome breakout flows for several centuries before the new pluton breaks through. No sign of this updoming @ present, but a basalt ingress at the NW rim near Norris has been ongoing for a couple of decades, it is heavier than rhyolite & therefore ponds under it heating it & adding a small amount of extra gas to the degassed residue.

Will keep watching that space; the hydrothermal explosions may be a mite fierce (anywhere from Waimangu geyser NZ height (1Km+) to Suoh Sumatra sized (20Km+ column height and ejection of over 0.1Km3 of lakefloor deposits).

Have a nice day: Ag
