Bullet trains hit criticism in Bay Area

Full story: The Reporter

Last November, more than 60 percent of voters on the San Francisco Peninsula supported a $9.9 billion bond measure to help pay for a high-speed rail line between San Francisco and the Los Angeles area.

This project is at best boneheaded. They should simply run the train along the Alamont and terminate it in Livermore, then finish the BART extension to Livermore. At the southern end, build a new station in Lancaster and have the train meet up with the LA metro.

By avoiding digging up downtown LA, downtown San Jose, and downtown San Francisco, the project cost will be dramatically reduced. Yet we were never given this option. What the planners never told you was the trains will not run any faster in the metro areas than BART does now, so they only thing you save is the transfer time between trains.

Drag your feet everyone. Arnie will be gone soon, and then we dump Rod Diridon on day one, then work on a project that stands a chance of completion.

This train is designed for fancy businessmen to go between the bay area and LA. You and I will not be able to afford the fare. Even in Japan where such stuff is highly subsidized, the fares for the bullet trains are hundreds of dollars for much less than that distance. This is a project for the airline first class crowd.
