Great efforts to spread awareness. Yes, though non-life threatening, alopecia areata is very devastating psychologically

Just a sincere and heartfelt thank you to Matt Kelley for working to increase awareness of alopecia areata, being a driving force behind the introduction of this legislative resolution, and helping others cope with this disease.

I just found out in October of 2007 that I had what they thought was a mild case of Alopecia Areata, then about 4 months later and many drugs, such as injections, Prednisone and scalp foam, I lost all of my hair on my scalp. Now I have lost my eyebrows, eyelashes and all my body hair. Yes, there too.

I am only 39 years old, athletic, business owner, and mom of a 17 year old and 4 year old. I have a wonderful husband. But my life has changed dramatically and for the first time suffering from Depression due to this disease. I have had cancer twice, been through two rapes,a dvorce and a drunken abusive father. I thought I was pretty strong too, until this.

This is a very serious disease and in my mind, is worse, because it is like being in hell everyday. You feel as if a monster is looking back at you everytime you look in the mirror. It is very scary and uncontrollable. For those who do not understand, I say, "ask..." Ask yourself how you would feel if one day, you woke up to brush your hair and in that brush was clumps of hair and where that brush was, is now a bald soft skinned spot where beautiful colored flowing hair once covered. Look at yourself as a beautiful colored canvas while you have hair, beacuse for me, it is now a white plain canvas waiting for the next artist in heaven to help paint that picture.
