Analysis: US now winning Iraq war that seemed lost

The United States is now winning the war that two years ago seemed lost. Limited, sometimes sharp fighting and periodic terrorist bombings in Iraq are likely to continue, possibly for years. But the Iraqi government and the U.S. now are able to shift focus from mainly combat to mainly building the fragile beginnings of peace _ a transition that many found almost unthinkable as recently as one year ago.

Despite the occasional bursts of violence, Iraq has reached the point where the insurgents, who once controlled whole cities, no longer have the clout to threaten the viability of the central government.

Iraq is becoming an Islam Republic just like Iran and US troops in Iraq are not leaving their bases, because they are the prime targets of everybody. So to say US is winning the war is stupid.

I just cannot fanthom how people see the USA as an Evil Occupier of Iraq? Certainly in any war there will be casualties, but claims that Bush is worse than Hitler, and all sorts of WILDLY EXAGGERATED claims which are beyond even a percentage of fact serve only to empower the terrorists. Just ask the people of Iraq if they prefer Sadamm and his lawless son's and secret police over "temporary" US assisted government guidance. Just like in Veitnam where USA had won the war but lost the press, if we listen to these lunies millions more will die. Even staring them in the face, they refuse to consider that USA was right. They claim that isolated, 1 in a million detainees who got there feelings hurt are the poor hurt ones. Ignoring the Daniel Pearl types who were beheaded for being Western. I say One Daniel Pearl is worth a million deatainees who may get there precious feelings hurt. We even have now tons of Sadamn's Yellow Cake. See following comment.

Bunch of Chicken Littles the lot of you. Our troops have done a great job and have turned the tide of War. We have come close to completing our objective of maintaining security while our special forces have trained the Iraqi Army to stand on their own. Now it is the Iraqis who are at the tip of the spear as they should be. In 10 years they will be streets named after Petreaus, Crocker, Bush and Rumsfeld. The Iraqis have chosen to remain a nation. The much touted "civil war" never happened and peace will soon be the norm. God bless all my brave comrades who made it happen despite our weak hearted countrymen who opposed our righteous and noble mission to free Iraq of the bondage and terror placed on it by the Hussein family. I am not ashamed of my service and everyone I served with was there because we believed in what it was we were trying to accomplish. So you can keep claiming the sky is falling but we know you for what you are.

Great post Toltec. You can't understand how the left can think like they do, because you are obviously a person of good temperament and who thinks things through for themselves. Most of these people do not understand the depth of the problems in the Middle East and other hot spots around the world. They receive most of their knowledge of international Relations from Bill Maher and The Daily Show or from left leaning talking heads like Jennings, Blitzer or Rather, then like chimps they mimic the talking points of the day. No, I am afraid we will never understand the workings of depraved selfish people who cannot see the forest for all those damn trees.

Toltec and Sultan, there's a word that describes the both of you perfectly. Sheep. Ignorant, misguided sheep. You believe every piece of misinformation about the Wars given to you by the likes of Fox News and other ridiculously ignorant conservative sources.

Toltec, you must've failed history. The U.S. LOST the Vietnam War. And, it wasn't because of the media or the peace protesters. The North Vietnamese with help from China and the Soviets beat us hands down. Get over it already.

Similarly, the people of Iraq and Afghanistan are fighting us to prevent the installment of pro-American puppet governments. Don't believe all that media hype about our troops fighting "terrorists." It's barbaric to invade and destroy countries filled with innocent people to look for a few "terrorists" who may or may not be there.

The fact of the matter is that the U.S. started these wars (i.e Iraq and Afghanistan) and have devastated those countries. You can talk all you want about "terrorists" as the reason, but both of you should at least read the unbiased, objective histories of the countries we illegally attacked. You'll find out how the U.S. has been trying to control that region for decades at the expense of the native peoples.

The people of the Middle East are very patient. What we're seeing is a lull in the violence. That shouldn't be misinterpreted as the U.S. winning.

You i am in the united states army and have been there and done that and cannot believe the disrespect you cowards show. How about you go out and watch bullets come after you or the young child attempting to cross the road?
