Punch leads to murder charge
Ypsilanti man facing charge after fight outside Ohio bar Thursday, March 27, 2008BY JOHN CANIGLIA Newhouse News Service LAKEWOOD, OHIO - Derrick Dykas threw one punch at Matthew Hockey. It was enough to kill him, authorities say. Hockey, 30, died of a head injury that police say came during an argument outside Johnny Malloy's bar in Lakewood, near Cleveland, early Saturday morning. Now Dykas, a 23-year-old Ypsilanti resident, is charged by Ohio authorities with murder. Advertisement "He never saw it coming,'' said Hockey's mother, Jean Verlotti. "He was sucker-punched. What a cowardly thing to do.'' Police said the men, who met that night, drank and argued in the bar. As the bar was closing around 2 a.m., the men went outside and away from the bar. Dykas threw one punch that caught Hockey in the head, according to police and coroner's officials. Hockey was knocked to the ground. But he got up and went to his apartment on Bonnieview Avenue, less than a mile from the bar. About 2:30 a.m. Saturday, a neighbor told police Hockey was screaming at someone on the phone. Hockey's family tried to call him all day. About 10 p.m., his mother drove to his apartment but couldn't get in. She noticed his car in the garage, but no tire tracks in the snow, police said. The next day, when he failed to meet Verlotti for brunch, she called other family members who got inside his third-floor apartment. They found him in bed. The coroner's office says Hockey died sometime Saturday from the blow to the head. Hockey worked at UPS in Middleburg Heights and went to Cuyahoga Community College, according to a police report. On weekends, however, he was a binge drinker, the report said, quoting his father, Martin. Matthew Hockey chose his apartment because it was close to his favorite bars and he could walk home, his father said, according to the police report. Hockey's mother disputed that, saying her son did not drink excessively and moved to Bonnieview because of friends in the area. "He touched everyone,'' she said. "He was a good person, a quiet person. I just want him to come back. He isn't coming back, is he?'' Police said Dykas, who had no criminal record, was working in Columbus and was in Cleveland for the weekend. He is free on bond and could not be reached for comment. On his MySpace page, Dykas says he's a 2002 Howell High School graduate. He says he's into skateboarding, coffee and karaoke and lists himself as a being in college. He doesn't turn up in directory searches at either Eastern Michigan University or the University of Michigan. News staff reporter David Jesse contributed to this report. |

Legislation needs to be introduced and the law needs to be changed! Maybe the family of the victim could fight for change so kids will think twice about fighting knowing they could kill someone and get charged with murder.

SF DA's will go soft. SF is known for very liberal actions. Based on past convictions, Sucker Puncher will see minimal time in jail if at all.

It's not Buckley's fault he's out on bail. Everything happens in our state and twice more in SF. Kamala Harris did not ask for the death penalty for a cop killer and thus she approved involuntary manslaughter for Buckley.
Perception is reality. Come on! Tracy Slaughter says we feel for the victims and promote safety in and outside the park - while - CalTrain says we radio ahead when under age drinking is observed. When that radio call is recvd in SF - do we know what really happens? Of course not. What train car were they observed in - what happens if they are in a different car when the trains pulls into Dodge? Friday night SF Giants games are the new rager. Think about it. Park at SC train station - take train into Park - drink on train - drink at game - drink while walking around the park - get back on train (built in designated driver) drink on train on way back - drink after getting back to San Carlos and other destinations. Its new and shocking to some - its been the craze/rage since Pac Bell became A.T and T. Besides - despite all the grieving and funeral arrangements - there is (I'm guessing) others who could be called "complicit" - in all this mess. Some say there was "another" punch thrown from someone else....our societies mob mentality probably provided a lot of Looky-Lous who were observing these - two - three - 15 - going at it -and yet - no one intervened....wow. As far as the other posts about TB - getting off on bail because of family influence...I'm not sure that hasnt been around for 2 thousand years - money runs to money. His 4 years will go either real fast or very slow. Depends on his conscience. We urge you to read the San Jose Spartan article - one of the best written. The author said: There are answers to our questions that only Buckley can provide. D.W. |
