Abuse of Police Powers

Police too often are given power that is damaging to not only the community, but also themselves. They serve for the law, but end up getting it into their head that they ARE the law. Some Police think that they are above the law; therefore, they carry out rash actions. One popular example is the incident where protestors were beaten on campus of UC Berkeley. These protestors were holding a peaceful protest when officers came on the scene and began beating and pepper-spraying these innocent people. This was outrageous to all. The police however, were acquitted of any charges. This was the most unbelievable part.
Another instance where police have abused their powers was in the case of John Thompson. Thompson was in a bar playing pool when he accidentally bumped into a woman who slapped him. Long story short, this lead to Thompson being attacked: brutally beaten and taser shocked many times. Does this sound like a rational excuse for the use of a taser?
As of April 2013, there have been 538 deaths relating to tasers and rising. Police are getting a little too taser happy. Some police that have experienced this have spoken and said that they never want to have to feel that pain again because it is 5 seconds of pure pain and torture. Many everyday police don't have this experience to have sensitivity towards the use of tasers.
Overall, there are way too many opportunities that police have to abuse their power, and this grows everyday that they have it. It needs to be stopped or put on limit.
