It's the new high speed train being tested at night/early morning on the Caltrain tracks. Not to worry, the speed is being kept down to 210 mph.

Believe it or not (after all the goofy posters on here - too funny!) it could be that your windows have blown their seal inside and are making that noise. If it sounds like a low hum or "thrumming" sound, almost a vibration combined with a grinding similar to a small motor or snare drum, this is most likely the cause.

It happens when the seal in between the glass panes in your windows is compromised or breaks after years of weather wear. When the wind hits the house just right, it makes this sound. It can come and go, and of course be at any time. Ours have awakened me and my daughter on numerous occasions; of course my husband, the owner of a business that INSTALLS REPLACEMENT WINDOWS sleeps through a hurricane.

Anyway, hope this makes some sense and helps a few of you. If your house is more than 8-10 years old, you should have a window inspection done anyway, as replacement will be getting close.

As for those of you with the brain chips, I've found it helps us if we line all the openings in our house with aluminum foil; that way the signal is broken and the transmissions can't make it through. ;o) Cheers!

Sleepless in Milpitas!!!
OMG!!! If the humming doesn't stop I'm gonna go crazy! Or maybe I already have! I've been hearing the noise on and off for a couple of years now. Not sure if its seasonal or what but its been constant for a few month now. ugg! I just wanna go to sleep. I have ear plugs in right now and it doesn't help. It sounds like my pool filter pump running but its not or I would turn it off! No other pools in area! Aye yi yi!!

Before 2 am in Portland, Oregon dogs in the neighborhood were going crazy barking and howling and woke me up so I looked out the front window to make sure our car wasn't getting broken into when suddenly a horrific buzzing noise began and got louder and louder then I heard moans and it scared the heck out of me and the sound came right up to my window I stepped backwards and all I could think to do was pray...after 2 minutes of praying the sound suddenly stopped and the dogs stopped barking and there was nothing but silence. Well I continued to pray for 20 more minutes then stopped and just sat there ....in awe, a little freaked out and still scared but so relieved it was over. I have no clue what this incident was.
It's happening to me around 1:30 am each night south florida.

Last summer on a few different nights, and then last night, my husband and I were both woken up by this awful thrumming/humming sound. Almost more of a feeling than a sound. It doesn't sound like freeway or electricity noises.... Once last summer I even went outside to see if I could find the source, but it was sort of everywhere. We live in Mountain View, near Moffett Field (maybe something going on there?) Anyone else heard this or know what it could be? It's a really unpleasant noise.
Hi, I'm so glad to learn I'm not the only one! I recently moved to Mountain View, and I have been plagued by this humming noise, too. After several times walking around the neighborhood with earplugs in to block other noises, I think I've traced the source: the HVAC system for 444 Castro St. The thrumming/humming is loudest there (plus more deep noises that don't seem to travel as far). To solve this problem, I encourage everyone to go to the City of Mountain View's website, http://www.mountainview.gov/

Scroll to the bottom of the homepage, and in tiny print at the bottom there is a button "Ask MV." Click on that to log your complaint. I clicked "Other" for type of concern. If they hear from a lot of people, hopefully that will be good pressure to solve the problem. I hope to see some more replies to this thread!

I used to live near an airport so pretty much used to most noise. Though a screaming baby still takes some getting used to.

Ron - are you still on this forum? Would the below still be true now in 2015? Are those planes still often there? I live near 85 and el Camino and hear this noise many evenings.
Ron wrote:
If you all must know, the mysterious humming sound is the C130's be serviced or prepped on Moffett airfiled. At any given moment there are 2 or 3 on the runway. I have heard this sound since I was kid, and now I work across from the air strip at Moffett Towers, and can see them fire them up every time the sound starts. They essentially work on them every day, even very early morning or late evening. At night, or when it is overcast, the sound carries the furthest.
I always assumed it was the wind tunnel until I started working here and saw the propellers spinning up every time the sound started.
