Except that they are genetically indeed a different subspecies.That was the stupidest thing in the world to begin with.
The environmental bizzaros tried to make the Mexican grey wolf a protected sub species when they found out northern grey wolves were flourishing.
They will make sub species out of sub species until hell won't have it, or until we stop them in their wolf tracks.
