its hard for me to understand how being a snowmobile cop protects natural resources. They seem to spend an inordinate amount of time on this during the winter. Shouldn't they be out checking for ice fishing violations?

The lack of snow for the past decade hasn't stopped the snowmobilers from siphoning off 1% of OUR gas taxes every year.

Why hasn't the legislature put a stop to this theft? MnUSA "campaign contributions"?

I agree, to much overlap in responsibility. Once COs start writing easy motorvehicle tickets their role is forgotten, enforceing wildlife rules.

Mr Potato Head; There is a formula that computes ATV/Snowmobile/Boat fuel consumption as it relates to gasoline sales in the state as a whole. So based upon that ratio, the same allocation of taxes is given to these programs to support them. And assuming you haven't ever owned one of these types of recreational vehicles, there is also a fairly hefty registration fee for these vehicles to support their sport. So if you want to thump your chest about something, why not complain about 40% of your motor vehicle sales tax going to transit - aka city buses and light rail? Otherwise, the gas tax being "siphoned off" as you describe it seems fair and equitable to me. Not to mention the tourism it creates for the state.

FYI, a snowmobiler wanted to ride around the Great Lakes as a trip.

He priced out needed trail fees etc, the total was $900, not including lodgeing, gas and oil. That would be the cost of riding around the Great Lakes.

He instead rode around the perimiter of Minnesota, the savings paid for the entire trip.

Snowmobilers pay for their sport!
