No more wilderness in the San Gabriels! Isn't 80,000 acres enough, especially when you consider that the vast majority of the landscape there is too rugged for human access anyway.

RaidersIn09, how could anyone be against this? no 80,000 acres isnt enough. its not costing you anything, so why shouldn't it be designated as wilderness to protect it for the future?

Here's why it shouldn't: once land acquires that magical "wilderness" designation, it's subject to myriad present and future restrictions based on the whim of eco-freak bureaucrats. What you can do on the land now, or even after initial designation, will become less and less. Sure, there might be "public input" before radical changes are instituted, but we all know that the conclusions are foregone and the land gets locked up tighter and tighter no matter what the "people" say.

Despite agreeing with your football alliances I couldn't disagree with your assessment more. You state, "it's subject to myriad present and future restrictions based on the whim of eco-freak bureaucrats".
The beauty of wilderness designation, is that it sets a law that guides the management of the forest taking it out of the hands of whatever administration is in power. Guiding the managing agency to protect it for its conservation and low impact recreation values, forever.
It also is great for the community, nearby open space means our home values show more resilience important in this economy.
