I find it ironic that I see this article on the same day that I got my gun permit. I am a woman, who got mine for protection. My husband works third shift and I do not like being home alone at night. He mentioned me getting a small handgun,.....and after much debate, I have finally gotten one. Next on my list is a safety course and some target practice. I will admit, It makes me a little nervous, but the more I shoot, the more comfortable I am with it and the less nervous I am. I am glad to see women taking the steps to protect themselves. You just never know nowadays what can/could happened. Better to be safe than sorry.

When my husband started a 3d shift job it surprised me how much I minded being alone all night here at home with two young children. So I got a dog, who was the best companion for the next 10 years until he had to be put to sleep 2 years ago due to cancer of the spleen.

I would love to have another dog, a lab mix like my first one, but times are too uncertain right now. I am seriously considering a gun too, but will wait until I can schedule some training.

Besides the NRA there is also the Women in the Outdoors programs, sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation.

It is great to see that women are taking their protection into their own hands. PFA's and dogs and locks can only do so much.
