I'm genuinely curious as to what the purpose would or could be. I'm not anti-guns I'm just trying to figure out if there is a reason other than "Its a freedom & right"

Sure you don't know? If you are serious, do all of us
a favor.....disarm....immediatel y.
You are no different than most who own guns today.
Untrained, inexperienced and too ignorant to own one.

There is a long answer and a short one. The short is to allow you to continue to fire when massivly out numbered and you can't afford the time to reload. ..and no the police and military aren't the only organized armed forces. Otherwise, we wouldn't need the legal terms; racketeering, guerrilla, or terrorism (the organized version of hate crime).
