Why would someone own a military-style rifle?

There are 26 comments on the Click Orlando story from Dec 21, 2012, titled Why would someone own a military-style rifle?. In it, Click Orlando reports that:

One of the three guns Adam Lanza used to kill 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, was a military-style semiautomatic rifle known as an AR-15. That surprised and shocked a lot of people unfamiliar with America's gun culture.

I had a couple of roosters that were like pit bulls. They would attack anyone and anything they came across. They wrecked my garden and all the flower beds and tore up all the screens on the lower part of the house.
One night a coyote came in and unburdened me. In the morning, all's that I could find left of the roosters were their heads.
That was the most peaceful they ever looked.
Why would you have animals that you couldn't handle? Further, leaving them unprotected to get killed by a coyote? You make me want to puke.

I have a lot of friends that do home farming. What you did was WRONG!

Yeah. When a riot breaks out, many of those who laughed at those who bought semi-automatic rifles will wish they had followed in their footsteps.

Riots, multiple criminals breaking into the home (who also might be armed), hunting multiple animals (hogs) at once, protection in the wilderness from multiple animals (packs of wolves, multiple bears, etc.), wanting to practice their rifle shots without having to reload very frequently at the range (load the mags up at home and bring a bunch of 'em), etc. etc.

It's their right, nonetheless, even if the government seeks to ilegally infringe upon that right.

Keep comparing those apples to oranges.
Lets cut bullsht on this ... I use one for hog hunting when I'm close to dry creek beds, where hogs maybe bedded down ... I have just enough accessories on it to do the job with. Sometimes there maybe 10 or 12 pigs together and I want a 30 rd mag in it too....
Pigs are not cute and cuddly critters.

I'm a predator hunter and coyotes will come in during daylight hours and snatch a chicken. They take the whole bird; they don't leave the head behind. what got those two chickens was a stray dog
