Ice fishing should be listed in the DSM-IV as a mental illness.

Ice fishing is horribly exploitive of diminishing natural resources and is a significant source of pollution. The drunks urinating on the lake, dripping beer and oil on the surface, making snowmobile and tire tracks on the virgin snow. It's long past time to ban this shameful practice in Minnesota. eod.

You are on a roll tonight ... or are you on heavy-duty drugs ... like Risperdal? Staff is being nice tonight, letting you play late.

Nurse Carmen will be by later with the password ... and your shot. Sleep tite.

PETA: Fish Have Feelings, Too
Hold The Sushi: PETA Starts Fish Empathy Project

"No one would ever put a hook through a dog's or cat's mouth," said Bruce Friedrich, PETA's director of vegan outreach. "Once people start to understand that fish, although they come in different packaging, are just as intelligent, they'll stop eating them."

I'm too busy laughing half the time lately to care what others might have in mind. Back to WBL ... PETA's too much like Cloris Leachman: outrageous. Joan Rivers too. I'd much rather go ice fishing on WBL. The article is correct about the huge crowds that used to show up. Bringing that back might help invigorate Winter Carnival.

Something has to. Ice palaces are too expensive to have very often. Now, if the weather would only co-operate ... you watch ... it'll be 50F end of January.

I have a good friend who fishes Mille Lacs every weekend- and always catch and release. I guess he can't stand all those screaming fish. lol

I'm fairly sure Mille Lacs is okay for keepers but I'm not sure about eating fish taken from some of our local waters ... and to think we used to tramp along the river when we were daring kids. Armour and Swift were still going full-tilt on the other side the Rock Island (now UP) RR bridge ... just south of the Metro sewage treatment plant. We were very proud we made it that far ... remote spot considering it was in the middle of town. Mushrat and carp paradise.

They better move the contest up a couple of months, for White Bear Lake is becoming
the vanishing lake. There are already plans of how to develope the lake bottom once
the water is completely gone, in about five years.

I like fishing through the ice for the olive on the bottom of my glass. Otherwise, ice fishing is a pastime for other folks. I do however, look forward to all of the other Winter Carnival events. Volunteering for events prior to the start is half the fun too. I hope the weather cooperates, and all of the events draw record breaking crowds.

I love to fish but I am not a fan of ice fishing. But you have opened my eyes to the PETA lunacy, so this winter I will head for the ice. I did not spend all this time evolving to the top of the food chain to eat tofu!

They claim plants also have feelings, so what's left to eat? Nothing. So PETA should disappear through starvation and malnutrition anyday now. lol

I am with you on that one too! These PETA types will usually show up where there are the television cameras, I refer to them as television activists.

So my sweetcorn screams when I pop it into boiling water? Well, poor things ... but it is for a good cause: our tummies.

The taste of just-harvested (then immediately prepared) sweetcorn is so delicious. We pick some from the backyard and run it right indoors, where it doesn't stand a chance in the kitchen. The sugars haven't had a chance to turn yet ... yum. And that's why your grandmother gardened. This has been Joyce Lamont, 8-3-0 WCCO with today's cooking moment.

I guess herbivores are less evil than carnivores. How far back in human history were we not carnivores? Never? I remember Ron Schara saying PETA had sent him an envelope of feces at his home. What a ****** thing to do.

Low-life is is what low-life does. Some of the more ultra-animal rights activists have terrorized research lab employees long enough. It's a large problem in areas where lots of research labs are, like the Bay Area, SoCal, Westchester County, NY, the DC area. Employees often have to be escorted to parked cars or mass transit. They receive threats constantly. Don't misunderstand ... I don't think bunnies or turtles should be sacrificed for my eye-liner, either. But a TB cure or AIDS vaccine and some apes have to suffer? Call me unethical ... bye-bye chimp.
