may be we should leave the canoeing to the indians since they invented it.

Yeah, that makes sense. That way when one of them drowns, folks won't feel so bad. Try rock-climbing during a thunderstorm...it's much safer.

The picture related to this story shows a perfect low head dam. These things look smooth and easy, but they create a horizontal circular flow that pulls anything just downstream of the dam back toward the dam. Anything caught in the hydraulic gets recycled with no way out. In a normal hydraulic, the exit is on either side. On a low head dam, there is not an exit.
