Why is one person in the boat with a 5, 3 and 1 year old. It's hard enough to take care of them on shore, let alone out on the water,If the adult would have been struck in the head, who would have saved these kids. PUre stupidity.

There is no reason for a 1 year old to be in a boat, ever.

I know accidents can happen, but this guy was just an accident waiting to happen....good job on the life vests dad, but next time leave the 1 year old with a sitter.

While I agree that this guy should not have been in a boat by himself and three young children. Your comment makes you a moron. So if you lived in Venice you'd never take your kid on a boat? Boating with children (babies included) is fine provided you are experienced and responsible enough to do so. This person was obviously neither. All states should require people who want to boat to get a license, just like driving a car. Alcohol laws should also be identical to the highways.

Your Venice comment is just ridiculous.

No, you are wrong. There is never a justification for taking a 1 year old out on a boat for pleasure. There's just no good reason to do it and plenty of excellent reasons not to do it.

I really don't think boating is especially good for a 3 year old either. Boating with young children and only 1 adult is grounds for negligence too. If there was another adult in the boat this guy could have just worried about driving instead of trying to grab the kid too.

The five year old in this story is the smartest person involved.

The children had life vests, hardly being irresponsible. Crap happens, no reason why a 1 yr old can not be in a boat. Just because some people are raised around land and never on the water, does not mean that everyone should feel the same way. Glad all is well that ended well.

I grew up on a lake and have had boats all my life. There is no good reason for a 1 year old to be in a boat and a lot of reasons for the child to not be in a boat. If the child were not in the boat, this discussion wouldn't even be occurring.

I don't see any reason NOT to have a 1 or 3 year old in a boat, but as others have commented, under controlled conditions. Kids this age cannot do anything for themselves boat-wise; the 5 yr old went above and beyond the call of duty by cutting the power. One adult with three kids of these ages is beyond irresponsible.
Actually one adult with ONE kid in this age bracket is pretty foolhardy too; one person should be concentrating on controlling the boat (which this guy obviously was NOT) and one should be tending to a reasonable number of kids. Actually in this age range, two adults may not be enough for 3 kids in a runabout boat, especially the way this clown must have been operating!

Your first sentence is in contradiction with the rest of your post. First you state you don't see any reason not to have a 1 or 3 year old in a boat. You then list several reasons to not have young children in a boat.

Huh?

He should be charged with child endangerment. Taking 3 kids out in a boat by yourself is just plain stupid. How can you drive the boat, while watching 3 children under the age of 5.
