Well, now it's nearing the end of the year.
And yet, there has been no resolution of this senseless tragedy.
The First Selectman's findings?
The Westport PD's findings?
The fate of Longshore Sailing School?
Changes in its procedures, presuming it is allowed to continue operating?
The fate of the Longshore "Instructor" who took those three children out for what was apparently a "ride," not a "lesson?"
A slightly different topic, but somewhat related:

Whatever happened to the story about the boy who was killed riding a motorbike by a wire stretched across the path? Was there an arrest? Did i miss it? Is it still under investigation?

I do not recall an arrest being made. I presume it remains under investigation.

I"d almost feel a bit relived if money changed hands in these cases and the victims or family of the victims got a huge settlement. Then it would have been the recipients' choice to take money over justice. It's more likely the case, however, that any monies were paid to law enforcement agencies, lawyers, CEO's, court personnel--anyone BUT the victims or families, who just didn't know how to fight the system. In this particular case, how many toddlers need to drown before these "special arrangements" are stopped? Dominick Dunne, Mark Fuhrman where are you?

I fervently share that hope.
Frankly, I am disappointed with the apparent inaction of Westport's First Selectman, Parks & Recreation and Police Departments.
Nearly half a year has gone by..and..still no public resolution of how and why this needless death took place..still no detailing of steps to prevent another from happening.
There is no rug in Westport big enough to sweep and keep this under.
Shame! Shame on the Town, its First Selectman, its Parks and Recreation Department, its Police Department, and the Longshore Sailing School, for their silence. It is contemptable.

This tragedy will play on and on in the minds of the Aunt and mother, long after we forget. And lets not forget the instructor, a sixteen year old girl who was not even supposed to be there that day but was called in to work and just did what she was told. She is the second victim, she has dropped out of college and is devastated and will forever blame herself. Who supplied the faulty life jacket? why was it not checked? I hope Mommy and Aunty had a nice tennis game. At least they played right at longshore where they could hear the screams, you would think the wife of a Doctor would know better, even if she was just a guest from New York.

Plenty of blame to go around starting with the parents. What ever happened as far as settlement is concerned??

Verrry quiet.

On an ironic note, three 8 year old boys, sailing dinghies from the Tokeneke Club in Darien, had to be rescued after their 'lesson' drifted them out into open water in a heavy westerly breeze today.
Norwalk marine police found one kid hysterically crying in a three foot chop with 25 knot winds.
A Darien lobsterman picked up the other two from a boat already swamped with water which capsized as he approached. They were also upset.
The good news is that all three were wearing P-F-Ds, are alive, and presumably well.
The bad news is that the judgement of someone at the Tokeneke Club needs serious examination. One wonders why they were sailing under such wind conditions, why there was no motorized supervision nearby, and why no call for assistance was apparently ever made from the club.
I've been on the water all my life, and I just don't get the 'thinking' that goes into these needless tragedies and near misses.
Bottom line - the axiom of being doomed to a repeat of history. We came very close to that today.
