I remember having to reach in under the banks of the pond looking for the puck. As a kid you would worry about critters being under there. It was nice to have some younger kids around so you could make them look first.

I'm tired of hearing this crap about hockey being a part our lives in Minnesota. More kids play basketball than hockey. Williams Arean is packed every night. You don't see the same thing at Mariucci.

Take a drive up north in the winter sometime. You'll know exactly what he's talking about.

I think the attendance counts for the 2010 State Tournaments says it all:

Boys Basketball 56,000 (Total for A, AA, AAA, AAAA)
Boys Hockey 119,000 (Total for A, AA)

I grew up in Richfield as well and remember heading to the park to skate (same one as Darby). You could always get pick up games going there and it was alot of fun! It was a sad day when we learned that park was going to be converted to something else and the warming house was going to be torn down. Kids today really don't understand the concept of pick up games at the rink... Too bad. Darby is a class act!

Great article with a wonderful perspective from Darby...I recall watching him play for the Gophers, my Dad took us to lots of games and we always went to Skate with the Gophers where you would actually get to skate on the rink at the old Mariucci and skate with the players, I'm pretty sure I had Darby's signature, along with all of the other Gophers, on my skates! I know that basketball has become more popular over the years but I do believe that MN is still the State of Hockey...Cheers to Hockey Day in MN!!

That Darby Hendrickson is almost 40 (38) makes me feel incredibly old. Where has my youth gone? Where has his?

A basketball player takes an elbow and sits out the next week, a hockey player takes an elbow, spits a few teeth out on the ice and asks the person who just hit him "is that all you got?".

To even make a comment stating that basketball is more popular in Minnesota than hockey just shows the ignorance of the person making the comment. If you drive around anyhwere outside of the inner city then you would know this. How many basketball players from Minnesota are remembered? now compare that to how many hockey players are.

I believe Richfield HS is having difficulty fielding a hockey team. How about it, Darby? Coach that team. Give back to Richfield. You'll bring in the kids who are opting for private schools and higher level programs.
