I remember Bill JOhnson and how the media played up his brashness. The nonskiers do not realize the horrendous danger that faces each skier as he takes off down the slopes. Fate intervened and prevented Johnson from success for many years. I hope that his friends in Park City have not forgotten him.

i hasten to add that Phil and Steve Mahre had indeed put the US Ski Team on the ski racing map before Bill's gold. phil is the only man in the world to have won 3 consecutive world cup overall titles except for ingemar stenmark. phil did so from 1981-83, against the great stenmark, probably the greatest ever technical racer, in the greatest ever ski rivalry. phil won gold only days after bill did in sarajevo.

but billy alone put the Team on the world downhill racing map. there may never be another American ski racer like him, in terms of sheer will and fearlessness to win downhill races.
