While I'm not Indian or of Indian descent, as a brown guy, it's embarrassing seeing a country with a billion brown people do so bad at the Olympics.

You know you bring up a really good point. I guess the answer might be that the Indians do not value sports as much as the rest of the world.

Folks, India has won only three bronze and one silver medal in individual Olympic events, in ALL the Olympic games combined!

It's the dots on the foreheads. Not very aero/hydro-dynamic.

china are the same but they manage to excel in sports. Stop making stupid excuses, any country can have success in sports if they put the effort and organization in.

well i was talking about indians, not chinese. indians are not known for sports. i dont actually think they care too much about that compared to everything else.

chinese are different

I encountered an Indian doctor at an occupational health clinic.I'm afraid they are better at sports.

lol. ummm, i discovered years ago that the educational standards in India are much lower, so its easy to become a doctor. you can get in with D's and E's. Perhaps that doctor got his degree in India

OF course Indians value sport. Look how much they follow cricket.

The reason for India's poor performance in all sports (bar cricket) is that, as a race, Indians have a very slight and unathletic build when compared to their white and black counterparts.

dont buy that Chinese do not have natural advantage in this area either, but they thrive in technical sports.

Has anyone noticed how poor South Africa's Olympics is too? One medal...

yes we know. its quite horrible. but we have come to expect that from SA unfortunately. we aren't expecting much from our soccer team for 2010 either. i doubt they'll make it to the quarter finals. Brazil's my team, anyway!

It explains it partly, though.

Look also athow poorly Pakistan and Bangledesh fair. Neither have got any medals this year (yet) but have a combined popultaion of over 300m.

Of course there will always be exceptions (Amir Khan for example) so with enough work, south Asians could, like the Chinese become successful in sport. But i feel south Asians have a massive disadvantage genetically.

Natural genetics play a big part of sport. West Africans and West Indians make great sprinters and footballers but poor ditance runners. East Africans make great distance runners, but not one East African footballer has ever made it, yet East Africans love football.

i hear you. its not an exact science is it? it comes down to personal ambition, i think. ANd in this case, Indians are not too ambitious in sport. South Africa has too much politics in sport and so on and so on

I read so many comments on this discussion. I am an Indian and a big fan of olympics. I think India can really win some golds. As far as genetics is concerned, indians have a very diverse genetics which ranges from good boxer to runners to shooters etc. The biggest problem with India is lack of facilities and equipment for training that other countries like China, US have. There is a lot of enthu also but politics and lack of amenities in India is the main reason. Hopefully in 2012 and 2016 we will see better results.

It takes more than physical size to win.
Bryan Clay(US) is the probably the smallest(5ft10in, 185 lbs) competitor in the 2008 Olympic decathlon. He won the gold medal in the decathlon by a large margin, 240 pts.
Sam Kamau Wanjiru (Kenya) won the gold medal in 2008 Olympic marathon, setting a new Olympic record time. He's just 5ft 4in tall and weights 112 lbs.
