We have a lot of open space. Don't see why a few hay bales and some signs
can't be put together. The Golden Gate Archery field is noting special and
it's self paroled--meaning the archery hobbyists just shoot arrows. There's no
need for any county, or city personal--although it might give open space something to do all day instead of just driving around in and wasting gas. They would have a purpose, but in reality--they would not be needed. Just a reminder--Marin has
nothing fun to do anymore? Oh wait, excuse me--we can ride on overcrowded trails with cops pointing lasers at you. Yes Ha!!

Hello Dano,

You are right. The Golden Gate Park Archery Range is not setup for world class outdoor FITA target archery standard, but it is all we have in San Francisco, and certainly the closest to Marin County. The field faces east.

All FITA tournament have the athletes shooting north, so the athletes are not required to stand facing the sun any part of the day during these full day or two day events.

Hay bales would do just fine for practice, until the center of it becomes so weak that arrows shoot right through it and mess up the arrow vanes. This is why the pros always bring an extra piece of arrow stopping foam and place it on the weakest area of the bale to protect our all so important arrows.

After talking to various individuals living in Marin County, seems like tennis courts that is left vacant most part of the day is how the open space is being used, and they keep adding up. Archery is an Olympic sport before tennis became one. It is really surprising that the entire Marin County does not even offer the worst possible worthless location (far out) so that it is there for the Olympic hopeful to try out. As far as I know, kids just love anything that shoot. All it takes is to have a large sign posted to explain all the safety rules on the archery range, then the kids could do their own experimenting while parents could have a romantic picnic, or read a book, or tan themselves, or even join in.

No one really lose in archery. It is about improving one self and beating your personal best. FITA has a system that if you shoot over 1000 points out of 1440, you just earned a special classification pin, and the next stops are 1100, 1200, 1300, and 1400. I think there are only 4 of the 1400 ever given out, not sure. It is very much about "You know who you are", and not about who beats who. As for the children, it is a great way to train them to set short term and long term goals..... short term goal being pop a large balloon at the center of the target, and long term goal being beating their person best score round after around. I recommend this sport to any children. Archery is also consider to be an upcoming popular sport for the ladies.

I cannot stop quoting this, but how many Robinhood movies came out since the first one? The new Robinhood movie starring Russell is coming out soon. All I could wish for is that it would renew the interest in the sport of archery.

Hello Robin,

I am already a member of the Novato indoor range, the Northwoods Bowmen. However, that's no full FITA, that is only 18 m. Olympic Archery shoot at 90 m and 70 m.

Tony is a very inspiring archer. He exudes so much positive energy for our sport. One of the reasons I left the bay area was because I struggled finding places to train... maybe I left a bit too soon... ;) Good luck Tony! It was a pleasure shooting with you at Golden Gate Park. I hope to see you at some international events!

Update: Larkspur Recreational Center is going to start a new archery program for 5th to 8th graders (children of age approximately 11 to 15). I will be the archery coach of this program. I am not sure if there is any special requirement to join as of this moment, so anyone who is interested should call the center, and make a special request if your child doesn't qualify due to any specific reason.

Daily Horoscope for December 26

Scorpio

Something that you've always taken for granted or believed implicitly could have a big question mark hanging over it during the next few weeks. The more entrenched your views are about this, the more difficult it will be to accept that perhaps it's time for a change of opinion or, at the very least, a revaluation of what you think. Mercury turns retro in your house of communications, so do your best to be open-minded now.
