Got it in one.

This year Rodney Hide plans to review the effectiveness of NZ dog control laws. And I imagine this does not sit well with those who have spent a considerable part of their careers telling us of the alleged dangers of certain dog breeds. According to NZ media there are several thousand people admitted to hospital every year for serious dog bites. For months there was nothing in the media about dog attacks and yet over the last few months we have been bombarded with it – and like usual anyone could be forgiven for thinking they are all coming from Pit Bulls – it is truly as though attacks from other breeds are absolutely irrelevant to their victims in the eyes of the media and our political shysters.

And yet unlike Lawrence Yule and Michael Laws and others I imagine Rodney Hide has at least bothered to look at the ineffectiveness dog breed bans have had overseas at reducing serious dog bites. Which really is little wonder considering there is not one piece of scientific evidence in the world that says you can determine which dogs will be dangerous and which will be safe by breed alone. Not one piece.

As for this silly article. A part of my family is from Southland. I used to spend my holidays there and they used to give away 6 packs of yoghurt and 5 dollars of cold hard cash in the 90s on the radio! I know of personally a case of where an old lady’s dog was killed by sheep dogs – and you can bet your life there sure as hell was not media reporting for that! But then again that would be like watching a horror film where Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers had a public image like Michael J Fox I guess.
