I'd EXPECT to be sacked if I made an $8m error. In fact I'd probably resign.

And I doubt the validity of the statement "these things happen all the time". Highly doubtful....sure they happen from time to time, but not frequently enough to excuse the mistake occurring in the first place.

Now, if it was a government employee who made the error with government funds I bet there'd be a major call for blood. But because it's the bank, everyone's keen to put the boot in for them doing what's quite likely well justified.
