Hawke's Bay Newswire:
17-year-old girl will appear in the Gisborne District Court on Monday on arson charges after three house fires in Wairoa in northern Hawke's Bay. The first of the fires happened last Wednesday night, with the house extensively damaged. The fires were set in the bedrooms after money was stolen from dresser drawers according to police. A second house went up in flames around 10.30am Saturday, the third at 3.00pm. The homeowners were all away when the fires started. On Saturday night police arrested the 17-year-old. She faces three arson charges and burglary charges. Police are saying that in other places arson and theft are on the rise too due to the bad economy and gangs on the streets loitering and graffitti writing on walls in various neighborhoods. Police say other charges are pending against the 17-year old.

We want everybody to know that with the deteriorating economy, our police stations and courthouses are going to be extra busy dealing with criminals and that will test the fortitude and patience of our staff. In its annual report on World Economic Outlook, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) states that economic activity “continues to grow at a robust pace…while inflation pressures either remain high or keep rising, particularly in a number of oil exporters.” The report indicates that real gross domestic product (GDP) growth “is projected to weaken only modestly during 2008-09, from 6.5 percent to just below 6 percent, with oil exporters and non-oil economies growing at a similar pace.” The report goes on to say that “The effects of falling demand in advanced partner economies and increased supply-said constraints in oil sectors are projected to be partly offset by robust domestic demand and activity in non-0il sectors.” The report warns that “Rising oil and food prices are posing important budgetary challenges for many non-oil economies. By contract, the global financial turmoil has had relatively little effect on the region thus far, beyond pressing stock markets to surrender earlier gains.” The report discusses the threat of inflation and says that “Signs of overheating are multiplying. Inflation has reached double-digit rates even in some countries with traditional low rates, such as Saudi Arabia, and exceeds 20 percent in Egypt and the Islamic Republic of Iran.”[In fact, Iran’s central bank announced that inflations rate has reached 29 percent in October]. The IMF projects the GDP of the Arab countries to reach $2.4 trillion this year and the foreign currency reserves to reach $1 trillion for the first time, also this year and $1.320 trillion next year.
