History

Archaeological evidence suggests that Samoa was inhabited as early as 1000 B.C., but Polynesian oral histories and traditions do not go back beyond A.D. 1250. According to native traditions the Samoan Islands were the original home of the Polynesian race, from which colonists peopled the other Polynesian islands of the Pacific. The Samoans drove out invaders from the Tonga Islands and began forming their own nation about 850 years ago.

Rotuma History

'Origins' in Oral History

Rotuman oral history indicates that the islands' first inhabitants came from Samoa, whence they were led by a man named Raho. Shortly thereafter, further settlers arrived from Tonga. Later, additional settlers came from Tonga and Kiribati.

On account of their location, the Rotuman people are often left uncategorised in terms of which Pacific ethnic group they belong to. Rotumans, by most accounts, physically most resemble the Polynesian people of Samoa and Tonga, the two races commonly attributed in Rotuman mythology as the true parent civilisations.

MYTHS AND LEGENDS OF KIRIBATI

Samoa holds a special place in the legends of the Gilbertese people. It was the predominant place, the main centre which the spirits left when they moved into the Gilbert Islands. Some moved there again. This process of spirit movement went on for a long time. Then the spirits became anti ma aomata (half spirit and half human). These remained in the Gilbert Islands and only travelled within the group. Much later they changed into human beings.
Most Gilbertese people believe that their ancestors were spirits, some created in Samoa and some in the Gilberts, and that it was the movement from Samoa which populated the Gilbert Islands for the first time.
( See Samoa: Mythology and Samoa: The Myth of Creation ).

MYTHS AND LEGENDS OF BERU ISLAND

Beru is considered by many to be the spiritual home of the Gilbert Islands. According to the legend of Beru Island in the Southern Gilberts and some other islands, Te Kaintikuaba was made from the spine of Na Atibu. It was a tree, in Samoa, which was the home of spirits who, together with Nareau the Wise, made the islands of Tungaru (the Gilbert Islands). They and their spirit descendants became inhabitants of these islands. Te Kaintikuaba can therefore be translated as "The Tree of Life". This is one of many versions.
Nareau the Wise saw that the branches of Te Kaintikuaba grew well on Samoa and were covered with spirits of all kinds and shapes.

Marquesas Island

The Marquesas Islands were colonized by sea-faring Polynesians as early as 300 A.D., thought to originate from Samoa. The dense population was concentrated in the narrow valleys, and consisted of warring tribes, who sometimes cannibalized their enemies.
Much of Polynesia, including the original settlers of Hawaii, Tahiti, Rapa Iti and Easter Island, was settled by Marquesans, believed to have departed from the Marquesas as a result more frequently of overpopulation and drought-related food shortages, than because of the nearly constant warfare that eventually became a prominent feature of the islands' culture. Almost the entire remainder of Polynesia, with the exception of a few areas of western Polynesia as well as the majority of the Polynesian outliers, was colonized by Marquesan descendants centered in Tahiti.

The Pulemelei pyramid is the largest structure in Polynesia. It is located on the tiny Samoan island of Savaii, the island which is regarded by Polynesian people as the cradle of Polynesian civilization. It is about 14 metres high and roughly 65 x 60 metres square. It is built on a stone base and is aligned according to the cardinal directions. It was hidden by the jungle but recently cleared by an excavation team from the Thor Heyerdahl Research Centre in Norway. The pyramid consists of rough basalt stones about the size of a football. No processed stones or a burial tomb have been discovered, and according to legend, it was built by the great god Togaloa.

Polynesian's from EGYPT......Lamanites...

“The term Lamanite includes all Indians and Indian mixtures, such as the Polynesians, the Guatemalans, the Peruvians, as well as the Sioux, the Apache, the Mohawk, the Navajo, and others… they are in all of the states of America from Tierra del Fuego all the way up to Point Barrows, and they are in nearly all the islands of the sea from Hawaii south to southern New Zealand… There are three stakes in Samoa and another is to be organized in those small Samoan islands. Four more stakes with Lamanite leaders… There are three stakes of Zion in Mexico City with Mexican leaders—Lamanite leaders. The stake presidencies, the bishops, the high council, the auxiliary leaders—everybody, with one or two exceptions— are Lamanites. In Monterrey, Mexico, in Guatemala, in Lima, in New Zealand, and elsewhere we have stakes of Zion with all their appropriate leaders.”2

At the very least, Mormon scripture and inferences from Mormon prophets suggest that the Book of Mormon be evaluated from the position that most (if not all) of the Amerindians are descendants of the Lamanites. I add that Kimball said, "You Polynesians of the Pacific are called Samoan or Maori, Tahitian or Hawaiian, according to your islands. There are probably sixty million of you on the two continents and on the Pacific Islands, all related by blood ties. The Lord calls you Lamanites, a name which has a pleasant ring, for many of the grandest people ever to live upon the earth were so called. In a limited sense, the name signifies the descendants of Laman and Lemuel, sons of your first American parent, Lehi; but you undoubtedly possess also the blood of the other sons, Sam, Nephi, and Jacob. And you likely have some Jewish blood from Mulek, son of Zedekiah, king of Judah. The name Lamanite distinguishes you from other peoples. It is not a name of derision or embarrassment, but one of which to be very proud." (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, p.596)

LAPITA...Asian theory...

Lapita pottery has long been held as the key to Polynesian colonization of the Eastern Pacific, despite there being no hard evidence to prove it. In fact the deeper one delves into the archaeology, chronology and gene trees of the Pacific one finds that there is no connection whatsoever between Polynesian and Lapita culture. The following article outlines many of these discrepancies. In fact it is quite embarrassing how poorly the scientists have interpreted the facts.

LAPITA THE NAME..

Lapita pottery has been misunderstood from the day it was discovered when an archaeologist picked up a piece of pottery from the bottom of his pit. Some natives arriving on the scene exclaimed "Xaapeta!" Which means "He dug a pit!" Unfortunately the scientist thought the natives were getting excited about the piece of rubble he was holding in his hand and decided that the exclamation "Xaapeta" was the name of the culture the pottery represented. Unfortunately he misheard them and decided the word said was Lapita, and through his "scientific" paper, the Lapita name has stuck.

Fundamental differences between Lapita and Polynesian Culture
The most basic difference between the Lapita and Polynesian culture is; "Ceramics were not manufactured by Polynesian societies at any time in East Polynesian prehistory. Therefore trying to connect Lapita and plainware pottery with Polynesians is illogical.”(Anita Smith in; An Archaeology of West Polynesian Prehistory, 2002). Polynesians also had a totally different tool kit.

Geneticist Lisa Matissoo-Smith successfully extracted DNA from the teeth of the Teouma skeletons, found in Lapita burial urns, some of which were sitting in the lotus position. She found that they did not contain any Polynesian or East Asian genes. To date she has not yet determined whether the DNA is Melanesian or from a forgotten civilization of Caucasian seafarers.

QUESTION: IS THE UNIVERSE DESIGNED?

Simple observation should reveal that the Universe is clearly the result of intelligent design, plan, and purpose. The Universe is incredibly orderly and complex. This is not the result of chance or natural events, it is the result of an intelligent designer. Consider the microscopic world of the atom with the precise mass ratio of the electron to the proton, or consider the large domain of our solar system with the precise masses and orbits of the planets. Consider photosynthesis, human reproduction, hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys, eyes, etc. The conclusion that these complex systems are the result of an intelligent designer requires much less faith than the idea it arose by time and chance. Think about the “units of life” that come in pairs like eyes, ears, hands, feet, etc.– they are exactly alike, but yet they are exactly reversed – an incredible design feature – and the concept reproduces like a carbon copy.

Lehi's Journey through the Pacific...

We next find traces of the Lehites in the Solomon Islands. Historians have traditionally assumed that the name was given by a Spanish explorer who later discovered the islands. But it is just as likely that the Spaniard learned the name from the natives, who remembered it from Lehi's visit, when he named the islands after the great king of Israel.

The next stop for the Lehites was clearly Fiji. They were probably forced to land there because of storms at sea, since the name of Fiji's largest city and present capital is "Suva" which is clearly the Hebrew word 'suphah' meaning "storm, whirlwind."

The tiny island of Niuafo'ou, between Fiji and Samoa, was probably named after Nephi. The similarity is obvious.

Moving eastward to Samoa, the Lehi group left a lasting influence here. First, in the name of the island group - again honoring Lehi's son Sam - with the rest of the name probably from Hebrew 'ohel' meaning "tent, tabernacle." Thus it is likely that here was a temporary resting place called "Sam's tents." More significant is the strong favorable reception which the Gospel has received here, ever since LDS missionaries first visited the islands, obviously because of the Samoans' dim recollections of the teachings of the great prophet from Jerusalem while among their ancestors. The name of the Samoan town of Apia is probably from Hebrew 'aph'("also") and 'jehu'("Jehovah"), thus having the meaning "also [here] is Jehovah!".

Leaving Samoa the Lehites stopped at Bora Bora in the Society Islands, the first large island of the group (the largest is Tahiti). This was obviously a stop primarily for replenishing their supply of drinking water (we can surmise that God had revealed to them the vast distance of ocean remaining in which no islands would be easily found), since the name consists of two Hebrew words which sound almost identical in Hebrew,'bor'(beth, resh) meaning "clean, pure" and 'bor'(beth, vav, resh) meaning "well, cistern". Thus this island, too, has a Hebrew name, meaning "pure well [of water]"!

From the Tahiti to America is largely empty ocean, and Lehi's group obviously could not leave such obvious traces there as in the more western islands. It would be mere speculation to assume that the island Morane several hundred miles SSE of Tahiti was a stopping place, the name being adopted by the Lehites, to appear at the end of their history as "Moroni." One could also speculate that Peru's name is from the root of the Hebrew word 'perudoth'("seeds") and reflects the joy of the group when landing there to find abundant usable plants. The name of Lima may be an echo of the name of Lemuel, a Hebrew name meaning "belonging to God."

Human Ancestral Frauds

Piltdown man: Found in a gravel pit in Sussex England in 1912, this fossil was considered by some sources to be the second most important fossil proving the evolution of man—until it was found to be a complete forgery 41 years later. The skull was found to be of modern age. The fragments had been chemically stained to give the appearance of age, and the teeth had been filed down!

Nebraska man: A single tooth, discovered in Nebraska in 1922 grew an entire evolutionary link between man and monkey, until another identical tooth was found which was protruding from the jawbone of a wild pig.

Java man: Initially discovered by Dutchman Eugene Dubois in 1891, all that was found of this claimed originator of humans was a skullcap, three teeth and a femur. The femur was found 50 feet away from the original skullcap a full year later. For almost 30 years Dubois downplayed the Wadjak skulls (two undoubtedly human skulls found very close to his "missing link").(source: Hank Hanegraaff, The Face That Demonstrates The Farce Of Evolution,[Word Publishing, Nashville, 1998], pp.50-52)

Orce man: Found in the southern Spanish town of Orce in 1982, and hailed as the oldest fossilized human remains ever found in Europe. One year later officials admitted the skull fragment was not human but probably came from a 4 month old donkey. Scientists had said the skull belonged to a 17 year old man who lived 900,000 to 1.6 million years ago, and even had very detail drawings done to represent what he would have looked like.(source: "Skull fragment may not be human", Knoxville News-Sentinel, 1983)

Neanderthal: Still synonymous with brutishness, the first Neanderthal remains were found in France in 1908. Considered to be ignorant, ape-like, stooped and knuckle-dragging, much of the evidence now suggests that Neanderthal was just as human as us, and his stooped appearance was because of arthritis and rickets. Neanderthals are now recognized as skilled hunters, believers in an after-life, and even skilled surgeons, as seen in one skeleton whose withered right arm had been amputated above the elbow.(source: "Upgrading Neanderthal Man", Time Magazine, May 17, 1971, Vol. 97, No. 20)

REMEMBER ALOT OF THESE CANOES WERE USED FOR MANY DIFFERENT OCCASIONS BUT IM GOING TO ONLY LEAST 1 OCCASION FOR EACH.

Alia - Was used for war, this Samoan war canoe could carry up to 300 people.

Taumualua - Used for travel.

Soatau - Used for war aid.

Paopao - Used for fishing in shallow water.

Vaa Alo - Fishing for bonito or tuna

Fautasi - Long boat used for shark fishing called tiuga malie.

Fearsome Samoan Warrior Funefeai had 3 main War Canoes which were:

1. TA ILE VAI
2. TA ILE TAI
3. PUALELE

Manu'a Warriors called some of their war canoes Va'a Fasifolau or literally translated as "boat for slaughtering voyages."

In ancient SAMOA, Samoans didnt really have too many names for their war canoes.

Ancient Samoans would decorate their war canoes with idols that they thought would bring luck on the battle field. Like the legendary Limulimu Tau War Canoe that they used and covered with sea weed.

The Samalaulu = War Canoe

The first ever painting of a Polynesian sailing double canoe was done by an artist in the crew of the Dutch Captain Jacob LeMaire, who encountered a Samoan canoe between Samoa and Tonga on the 8 May 1616. On the sail was a big picture of a MOA.

Tangiia and Tutapu
Te Ariki-Tara-are, high priest of Rarotonga; trans. by S. Percy Smith
__________
When Tangiia was born his grandfather, Ka‘u-kura, gave him the name of Rangi. When Tangiia’s uncle Pou-vananga-roa learned that his sister Ka‘u-ngaki had given birth to a son, he adopted the boy and renamed him Tangiia-nui. The uncle also adopted Tutapu, the son of his other sister Maonga.
Pou-vananga-roa appointed Maono, his eldest son, to be ariki, or head chief, of Tahiti; Tutapu was made an ariki of Iva (Hiva, or the Marquesas); Tangiia was made a tavana, or minor chief, of Tahiti.
Tangiia was unhappy with his appointment, so he seized the insignia of the ariki at the marae of Avarua and drove Maono away to the mountains. The village and its share of kuru (‘ulu, or breadfruit) now became his. Tangiia’s younger brothers waited for their share of land and power to be distributed to them, but nothing was given.
Dissension also arose between Tangiia and Tutapu over a stream, Vai-iria, a sacred stream of Tangiia’s. When Tutapu bathed in this stream, Tangiia attacked him. Tangiia’s teeth were broken and the plumes of the people of ‘Avaiki were trampled. The two cousins also fought over rights to two sea creatures, the raratea (white-finned shark) and the onu (turtle). Tutapu insisted that when a shark was killed the head belonged to him, while the tail was for Tangiia. Tangiia disagreed, and the two cousins separated-Tutapu returned to Iva, while Tangiia went to Ma‘uke [in the Cook Islands] to visit two sisters, Pua-tara and Moe-tuma, the daughters of Tata-uru-ariki and his wife Te Puaranga-uta.
Tangiia arrived in the district of Utaki, where a koutu (sacred meeting place) named Rangi-manuka is located. He looked for the two sisters and found them beating bark cloth. He composed a love song to them [and slept with them] before returning to Tahiti.
In Tahiti, Rakanui, his sister, asked him if he had taken the kuru (breadfruit tribute), not knowing that Tutapu had taken it to Iva. Tangiia got angry and snatched a portion of the turtle from the hand of his sister’s husband Maa. An ill-feeling arose between Tangiia and Maa. Rakanui took a canoe name Kai-oi and departed with Maa for the island of Huahine.
Tangiia now dwelt in Tahiti for some years, until he decided to outfit a canoe named Tuna-moe-vai, a name given by his grandfather Ka‘ukura. After the canoe was ready, Tangiia named it Taki-pu (later it was renamed Takitumu) and then visited ....‘Avaiki (Savai‘i in Samoa)... and many other islands. On his return to Tahiti, he sent Tino-rere to Ma‘uke to get his children [by the two sisters Pua-tara and Moe-tuma].

Voyages
Tangiia sailed west to ‘Avaiki (the ancestral homeland), still lamenting the loss of his children and his home. His chief warrior and navigator was Pai, to whom he gave the name Tei-vao-ariki.
Tangiia arrived in ‘Avaiki during ceremonies for the appointment of a chief and the feast of takurua, or presentation of the first fruits to the gods. He told the gods that he left his homeland after the war with Tutapu “over the government, the position of ariki, the fish-tribute, the turtle-tribute, the shark-tribute, the human-tribute, and the weapon Te Amio-enua.” The gods promised to give him mana so that he would not be defeated in battle and to set aside for him a land named Tumu-te-varovaro (the ancient name of Rarotonga), where he would live until his death. Tangiia begged the gods to join his expedition and the following gods consented-Tangaroa and his company; Tu-te-rangi-marama and his company; Tu-tavake; Rua-i-te-kari, Kau-kura, Mumai-io; Rua-te-atonga; Ari; Tupua-nui; Taakura; Kura-akaipo; Tonga-iti; Rangi-puta-rua; Ai-mario; Maru-mamao. Tangiia then begged the gods for all the things connected with the takurua festival, including the musical instruments and the dance postures. They consented.
Tangiia then sailed east from ‘Avaiki, stopping at Uea (Wallis Island), Kuporu (‘Upolu in Samoa), and Iti (Tahiti). There he met Iro (Hiro) and asked for Iro’s son, who would be made chief (ariki) of Tangiia’s people since Tangiia’s two sons had been killed by Tutapu. Hiro agreed and revealed that his son was on Rapa (Easter Island).
