City Rail Link needed to get Auckland moving

Dec 12, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Scoop

The City Centre Future Access Study released today confirms the best use of taxpayer money is to invest in sustainable public transport for Auckland, rather than frittering away billions on National's low-value motorway projects, Green Party transport spokesperson Julie Anne Genter said today.

Agreed, but Len Brown's train set isn't going to help matters much.

Trains are the best we've got at the moment.

What's your alternative, Gutsfull?

I'm not sure there is a good answer. The amount of money required to construct even a halfway decent rail network throughout all of Auckland is beyond the city's resources I would have thought. Auckland is very spread out. Doing a half arsed rail system will end up being of little help and pretty much a waste of money.

My best guess would be more roads, along with more public rubber on the roads. Move the ports operations to the Port of Tauranga and get a lot of the trucks off the road to make way for more cars and a top notch bus fleet. Combined with denser residential construction around the main commercial and industrial centres.

Maybe once the rates base expands to, I don't know, around say 3 million plus, perhaps then we'll be able to look at financing a (progressive) conversion to rail. Meantime, with the population increasing at current rates, I think money also needs to go into other areas of infrastructure to cope.

Still...I certainly don't profess to have THE answer on this one.

My 2 cents. the rail loop will help but solve the issue. Ive seen the detailed plans and the roadworks will cause huge traffic blockages for a few years until completed. No other way around this.

What Auckland needs it a mixed approach. A light rail that extends to all the outlying suburbs with a co-ordinated bus system. B
All of this pointelss if there is no parking available for people to use a park and side system and if there is a park and ride system in place, I can almost guarantee that the costs involved of using all the facilities including the trains or buses will actually cost more than if you drove yourself into the CBD.
So here's to holding your breath if you think that the Auckland council will be able to provide a cost effective system that needs the needs of the majority of the Auckland population.

The Auckland council is in a prime position to do something that will make much improvements in the near future and if they can keep greed out of the equation, then it should very well work
