Expat NZ student

If im honest then quite frankly its not really worthwhile for foreign students to study in New Zealand. Education is expensive and over rated, in fact living cost are astronomically high when considering the lack of nightlife and student experiences. The entire country is boring, even the cities, and most Kiwi's are horrendously uneducated. Even the ones who are tend to be lazy, incompetent, and inept. To be sucessfull Kiwi's move to Australia of the UK, in my opinion do yourselves a favor and head to Sydney or Melbourne.
However,
-For an international student the University of Auckland is best, its full of foreigners as downtown Auckland has become a "little asia", and is the most respected NZ university oversea's.
-The oldest and most respected locally is Otago, which is infamous for its freezing cold weather and its student culture (drinking). However this has been massively reduced in the last five or so years as the university has moved to close down the campus' student pubs and the surrounding bars, and they have shut down most of the fun student events. Which really just makes Otago year round cold. Not so desirable.
-Victoria in Wellington is full of hipsters and other pretentious arseholes. If you want to waste your time studying art, politics, or philosophy then this is the one for you, just don't complain when you cant find a job after graduating.
-Massey im unsure about, but surprisingly ive actually heard good things.
-Canterbury sucks; based in the city of Christchurch, a horrible earthquake ridden trash-heap of a city full of horrible, mostly old and inbred uneducated people. Outside of engineering their qualifications and graduates are not respected, especially in NZ.
-Lincoln, also in Canterbury, is for the areas large redneck/bogan farming population.
-Being very similar, Waikato is just as bad as Canterbury, less earthquake risk, but even more bogans.

In reply to the heartless low-life who made these comments:
-"Canterbury sucks; based in the city of Christchurch, a horrible earthquake ridden trash-heap of a city full of horrible, mostly old and inbred uneducated people. Outside of engineering their qualifications and graduates are not respected, especially in NZ.
-Lincoln, also in Canterbury, is for the areas large redneck/bogan farming population"

In order to make these horrific judgements about a city which has been through so much hardship, I would expect you to have been living there amongst the old, inbred uneducated people. As this is the only way you could get an accurate idea of their character as you have summed up in a very ugly way. If in the surprising event that you have seen this through your own eyes, I still believe you are a heartless lowlife as you have zero support or sympathy for a city which has shined through such dark days, and is trying so exceptionally hard to rebuild.
In response to your outrageous ideas that Canterbury graduates are not respected, this is a huge generalization, and unless you have done a large amount of research on the respect levels that employers have towards Canterbury graduates then I am going to have to say that your comment is unjustified and once again invalid.
You my friend are a nasty price of work, and would probably be a successful cruel politician, or businessmen, but this would require you to mix with the hipsters at Victoria, and you probably see yourself as way to good for that.

I live in Auckland and I'm looking at either going to Auckland or Otago. I'd like to study Commerce/Law/Psychology, set on Commerce but still undecided on the other two. I know Auckland is more respected academically, but Otago has the better student life and everyone who went there loved it. I want to move out of Auckland for a life experience, and for the student life in Otago. However I do want a respected degree and Auckland would be better for that. Any advice?

It really depends on the individual person I believe. I attended Auckland University and felt that it was too big - to be placed in overflow rooms in lecture halls where you cannot see the lecturer is insane. I transferred to Auckland University of Technology and have never been so happy to do so! Their business school is fantastic with the latest technology and good lecturers. I cannot comment on other degrees but for my business degree we have to do theory as well as working in our chosen majoring area so you gain a number of skills and get experience! Do some research around what University best fits you because at the end of the day University's are run as businesses and you are the customer. Good luck

Don't ever go near any university in New Zealand. American, Australian, British system is way better. New Zealand is a shit country when it comes to education. But anyway try to avoid Lincoln University it is a shit hole and no educational standards at all. I know many students inernational and domestic at Bachelor, Master and PHd left this shit hole uni. called Lincoln University.

I am a U.S. student who wants to study anthropology and plant sciences. I've considered Otago, Massey, Victoria, and Waikato universities. I'd also like to learn a bit more about Maori culture in my free time and have a great time while I study abroad, which I'm sure will happen regardless of where I attend. Any suggestions?

Can all the Aussies please just F off? People are here to find out what university in New Zealand is best suited for them, not to find out what your opinion on New Zealand is... Australia is a country full of racism if you cannot tell just from these rude comments..

Anyway on to the topic :)

Canterbury is well respected for engineering internationally.
Otago is great for health science and anything medical but also good for law i believe.
Victoria is good for law and art-type things
Auckland I'm not too sure about but i know it's a good one for international students.

But really they are all good all-round. And to the people who claim New Zealand education is bad, a degree is a degree.. if you completed a PHD in New Zealand compared to a 3 year degree at a highly ranked university somewhere in england of course the NZ one will look better to employers?

Eh

Seeing as theres only 8 universities in the country, and theyre all pretty much ranked the same level - there isnt much difference between them in NZ

You wont find the kinda discrepancy you will in say USA, India, China etc etc

I think AUT is better for Business and science - cos of their focus on application and industry over research

ANd AU is better for the liberal Arts - not that I give much respect to liberal arts majors lol

Uni of Auckland is best for business courses being in the economic capital of the country. As for the student life, Auckland is kinda just like any other city, though it is very diverse and you'll be exposed to a lot of different cultures, especially Moari and Asian cultures.

In saying that, Auckland is a beautiful city, ranked in the top 5 most livable and beautiful cities in the world, and has a great night life (if you have the money).

Otago is like the Yale of New Zealand, being in a town known for it's prestigious university, while Auckland Uni is like Harvard. Both are excellent, but they're reconsidered for different courses - Otago is very science/health based, while Auckland is business/law based.

If you're looking for a more artsy/social science based uni go to Victoria in Wellington, the capital city. It's not as cold as Otago, but very windy.

Overall, if you're looking to get a degree that will be more recognised internationally by employers, go to Auckland Uni, it has a better reputation. If you're looking for more of a party lifestyle, go to Otago.

I'm from other country and I'm pretty sure that people in my country recognize U of Auckland as the best and most prestigious University in NZ. To be honest, I don't even know what Waikato , Otago , Massey are !!
