Frozen Cup of Bellerose to be Replaced by Days Inn

Oct 17, 2008 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Village Voice

The Daily News called it "an unofficial Bellerose landmark," it was featured in a "Sex and the City" episode, and it had one fan at least at Chowhound.

It's typical of all the Indians who've moved into Bellerose and decided to tear down and BUILD BUILD BUILD. They've torn down lovely old capes and made monstrosities out of them with huge pillars everywhere. Now they tear down a landmark and put an ugly hotel in it's place. It's a residential neighborhood with middle class families. Why in the world do we need another hotel there?????

Did I hear a rumor that the Indian population of Bellererose wanted to change the name of the town? I am very happy that that did not happen. I am not a racist. I do think that a neighborhood should be kept clean and orderly. Absentee landlords are causing a lot of damage. All home owners should keep up their property, even if they have to hire someone to do it. Also, did you ever try to drive on Hillside Avenue without encountering double parked cars in front of Indian shopping establishments? If there is insufficient parking, do like everyone else and look for a legal spot to park and then shop.

Thank you - my sentiments exactly.
I am far from racist, been a New Yorker all my life and in fact lived in the South Bronx for the first 12 years of my life. However, if Indians want to come here 'in search of the American Dream' they should do what our forefathers did - assimilate!! Instead they isolate themselves, don't socialize with anyone other than their own kind, and continue on with their own way of life regardless of neighbors (ie. Hindu weddings that last 4 days with loud music until the wee hours), and tear down our beautiful quaint little houses to build HUGE houses that are totally out of place. And yes, the traffic and parking on Hillside is horrendous!
I have no problems with other races, nationalities, religions, etc. But when it affects my way of life, and my wellbeing then I have an issue.

Oh and sorry, Asian Indians were NOT here first.
Native American Indians were the first here. Go back to history class.

THE FIRST ASIAN INDIANS IN AMERICA
In many accounts, immigrants to the United States from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are referred to as Asian Indians. The first Asian Indians or Indian Americans, as they are also known, arrived in America as early as the middle of the nineteenth century. By the end of the nineteenth century, about 2,000 Indians, most of them Sikhs (a religious minority from India's Punjab region), settled on the west coast of the United States, having come in search of economic opportunity. The majority of Sikhs worked in agriculture and construction. Other Asian Indians came as merchants and traders; many worked in lumber mills and logging camps in the western states of Oregon, Washington, and California, where they rented bunkhouses, acquired knowledge of English, and assumed Western dress. Most of the Sikhs, however, refused to cut their hair or beards or forsake the wearing of the turbans that their religion required. In 1907 about 2,000 Indians, alongside other immigrants from China, Japan, Korea, Norway, and Italy worked on the building of the Western Pacific Railway in California. Other Indians helped build bridges and tunnels for California's other railroad projects

I left Bellrose 8 years ago. I loved it there, my kids went to school there and I have friends there BUT I felt the new immigrants were inconsiderate and did not embrace the neighborhood that they were new to. They had a me first attitude, took advantage of all the services but never volunteered..PTA, sports etc...
Yes I pay higher taxes but its worth every nickel.. Great parks, involved parents and a "we're in it together feel' from my neighbors.
Bellrose to me is a "nice place to visit, but wouldn't want to live there" anymore.
Frozen Cup being replaced by a hotel will be sad day!

I agree totally. This is exactly what I meant. None of the Indian parents got involved in any school PTA's or other activity. Kids and families unfriendly and keep to themselves. I don't understand why they come here, take advantage of our services but don't give anything back to the community.
What's really frustrating about Frozen Cup is that there are no local 'hang outs' anymore for teens. First they took away the bowling alley and now Frozen Cup! At least we have Starbucks, but how many teens would be interested in 'Edible Arrangements'??!!
I moved to Bellerose 16 years ago, and in that time there has been a drastic change. As the elderly either moved or passed away more Asian Indians move in to completely change the face of the neighborhood. Again, I'm not prejudice but I expect neighbors to assimilate, be friendly and socialize. Or at least not be so arrogant with a (like you said)'I'm better than you' attitude!!

The best was when I was pulling out of my block and a new neighbor was blocking the street with his taxi cab. I waited a few minutes as a courtesy while he continued to stand next to his cab having a conversation with one of the 15 people that lived in his house. He ignored me..I finally tooted my horn and he ...ready for this...gave me the finger. Wow he knew the universal sign language before he knew how to be a respectful neighbor. That gave me a wake up call.
When we moved to Long Island I knocked down my house and built a new one that was in keeping with the esthetics of my neighborhood. My grandparents were immigrants from Ireland and France, they worked hard, learned the language, paid TAXES, didn't build illegal apartments in their homes and embraced their community. Newer immigrants should learn a history lesson if they don't want the "old timers" to resent them. Pay taxes, quit turning your homes into boarding houses, learn how to make friends with people of different cultures.

You are so right! Same here, my family came from Germany & Italy. Things weren't written in a dozen different languages. They had to learn the language, find jobs and learn how to fit in.

And don't even mention the cabs!! There is someone in my area (there are at least 10 different people living in a single family house) who has those Car Service Cabs!! They are parked all over the block and sometimes partially block our driveway. Police have been called but the 105 pct is worthless!!!

When my daughter is off to college in 2 years, I'm leaving NY altogether. There will be nothing left for me here and I'll be happy to go.

Is it not your country as well sir? Your own words speak volumes...A strong work ethic, paying taxes and building neighborhoods is not exclusive to your ethnicity. What neighborhood are you referring to? I think Bellerose was built long before you or I ever were born.

How many of your sons and daughters are fighting for this country in Iraq? whether you agree with the it or not.
How many of your people volunteer (for free, no pay) their time and resources to help those in the community less fortunate.
How many of your people feel THANKFUL to be living and thriving in the greatest country on earth? You must agree its the greatest country on earth or surely you would not have come here.
US Veterans made this country what it is today...If it were not for them you wouldn't have a country to immigrate to. I Thank them, have you????

Everyone that has posted has made valid points.
To be honest when I was looking for a house I loved the Bellerose area but was hesitant because I noticed the neighborhood "changing". I am not racist, Queens is the most diversified borough there is. I enjoy Bellerose but I am not happy with the McMansions going up on postage stamp size property, every new store is some kind of cheap dollar store or ethnic supermarket. Unfortunately Bellerose is no longer the quiet, clean, beautiful residential little town I moved to. They've already built a Quality Inn on Jericho Tpke, which is not needed in this area. Why are they allowing another hotel to be built 3 blocks away. More importantly, why wasn't the community made aware of these before they were approved.

THANK YOU?? YOU ARE A JOKE. RECENTLY WHILE SHOPPING I HELD THE DOOR FOR AN INDIAN WOMAN COMING THROUGH AND SHE WALKED THROUGH WITH A HAUGHTY AIR AS IF IT WAS COMING TO HER INSTEAD OF HAVING THE CLASS TO SAY THANK YOU. So half way into the walk, I let the door go.
You come from the lowest income and the poorest conditions. Your women have no rights. So they come here and while their husbands don't give them rights, they think they can walk over Americans. WRONG - STUPID AND ARROGANT!!!

You should get on your knees and thank God for the right to come here.

All we ask is COMMON COURTESY, GOOD MANNERS.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND OR ARE YOU A COMPLETE MORON???

COURTESY AND GOOD MANNERS

that is a start. If you are the example,

I believe our Civic Association is trying to fight the building of this hotel. Especially because the property is not large enough. Which means that the hotel would be built upwards. Zoning laws will be looked into.

Wow-I felt like I wrote this for a second. You quoted my sentiments exactly!!
As for the 3 houses on 88th Road. We are STILL battling this issue. Now there are some tenants illegaly living in 2 of the houses. These houses STILL have no Certificates of Occupancy, NO Smoke or Carbon Monoxide detectors and no Hot water heaters or Boilers. Which means tenants are using heaters! How safe do you think that makes us feel?

Recently, the Hindus around the block from us were having their 4 day wedding celebration. Complete with a gold horse drawn carriage. I was not feeling well that weekend and by the 3rd day I was done with it. Instead of listening to reason, the Indian male member of the family yelled at me that it was "Freedom of Religion"!!! I do not care what your religion is, but I was taught to RESPECT my neighbors. This is the problem, they come here, continue their traditions with a complete and utter disregard for their neighbors. They do not try and be friends, nor do they listen to reason. What makes them better or more important than anyone else here.
As for paying taxes, well so do I! And I don't sock away my money to keep sending relatives over to live 10 people to a 3 bedroom house!!
Makes me so angry!
