I have an idea for our out of control B of E and Supt. If all of you quit and shut down the school we can take the roughly $30,000 per student it is costing the taxpayers to send their children to the OBEN schools and instead let them pick any private school they want and the taxpayers will pay for them to go there.
Think about it, our kids can pick from Friends Academy, Portledge, East Woods, St Dominics or any of the other private, catholic and other religious schools out there. Not one of these schools is anywhere close to the $30,000 per student it is costing us now. with a savings of $10,000 to $25,000 per student, we can cut the school taxes in half, get our kids educated by teachers who want to be there and dont blame the parents for their inabilities and finally dont have a supt and B of E hiding their money on them.
The only thing we have to lose under this scenario is half our school tax bill and having to deal with people who dont feel deception and lying is wrong.

Predictions:

The BOE president cannot resign. He is the town laughingstock for publicly supporting the SUPT under whose stewardship OB has had three failed budget votes, declining achievement despite mushrooming budgets, official state designation as a school 'in need of improvement' and this financial scandal. Resigning would be personal recognition of these public blunders and provoke even further laughter at his expense. He will either not run or run and lose his next reelection campaign.
The remaining members of the BOE will lose reelection if opposed or not run at all.

The SUPT has no options. She will stay no matter the cost to the district's children in terms of failed budgets. She will stay no matter the cost to the taxpayers in terms of school reputation. She will stay no matter the cost to the reputation of those board members who trusted her to maintain a district of excellence. She will stay because that is what is best for her. She will outlast her dwindling supporters on the board and limp to retirement in three years.

The interim assistant superintendent for business will leave. She has options and is already retired.

The community will vote down the budget time and time again. A new superintendent with a reputation for honesty will arrive in three years, slash the bloated and ethically challenged administration, and return OB to what it once was - a district of excellence.

We are in the business of teaching your children and that is what we are doing. Thank you all for your support. Come visit us at our website at: http://www.obenschools.org/

We welcome the community to get involved in our budget development process. See attached: http://www.obenschools.org/board/Budget%20Pos...

1. There's plenty to apologize for.

2. The issue is NOT past.

3. You and your board have set a TERRIBLE example for your students.

4. You have little to no community support.

5. And you know what you can do with your 'Thank you again!'

How many signatures on a petition would it take for ALL school personnel to NOT receive ANY raises until the state repeals it's designation of OB as a school 'in need of improvement'?

James Robinson should be ashamed by his comments to Grace Searby when she tries to explain where mistakes are being made. The State auditors apparently agreed with Mrs. Searby. Perhaps he and the other board members can't quite follow along when Mrs. Searby points out potential problems. They should admit their ignorance and resign after firing Freifelder and Harrington. How sad that Mr. Robinson feels Harrington and Freifelder have done so much "for the children." Yes, thank you that OBEN is in the bottom half for Regents results and the top half for salaries in Nassau County. Good job! That will really entice people to move into the district.

Does anyone know how we could implement this excellent suggestion? When we spend more per child than it costs for private school tuition and the results are poor, it is time to think about closing up shop and letting the parents choose a good school to send their children. And everyone would save on their taxes.
Maybe we could start this effort by petitions to: Close all OBEN schools; Fire all staff; Disband the Board of Ed; Offer private school tuition reimbursement to all children in the district.
Perhaps we could leave copies of these petitions in the lobbies of each of the schools as well as circulate them throughout the neighborhoods.
Once implemented, our homes will rise in value and our students will get the education they are entitled to.

Pliny - The above quote is NOT from an Oyster Bay official. It must be from an enemy of the school trying to make the school administration look as blind, arrogant and corrupt as possible. Imagine anyone from the district thinking they could fool the public with that old "deny, deny deny..then say it is in the past" routine? I like that "we have done nothing wrong therefore we have nothing to apologize" routine. Precious, but a bit too obvious. Nice try impostor.

Well, perhaps you're right. I'd like to think it's not from an OB-EN official, anyway. But, who knows for sure? The language is typical 'bureaucrat-speak' and does - at least over several posts - defend the district's malfeasance. It wouldn't be the first time that an 'insider' came off as sounding completely stupid by defending the indefensible. Especially if that 'insider' had a lot to lose by being exposed.

When it was time for contrition on the part of the Board and Superintendent, the taxpayers and students of Oyster Bay - East Norwich were given another display of indignant behavior by this ELECTED group of individuals. Oyster Bay - East Norwich residents should DEMAND nothing less than Harrington's and Freifelder's resignations IMMEDIATELY. If not, then the community needs to propose an alternate slate of Board Members to run in the next election against this cabal that is masquerading itself as a Board of Education which is supposedly protecting the taxpayers interests.

In the recent articles in the local papers our Board members and Superintendent insinuated that operation of the District occurs in the "real world" and outcome of the State audit was inferred to be some ideal or "perfect world" situation as to how a district should run. Is that how you set an example for our students in the district? Do you instruct our students to believe that rules and regulations can be broken in the "real world" as long as its for a perceived benefit for the "kids"?

The OBEN Board of Education missed an opportunty at the last "public meeting" (at which no questions were answered) to make amends with the taxpayers and students who they are obligated to represent. I caution the Board that they had better reconsider their position on this matter or the citizens of Oyster Bay and East Norwich will not pass a school budget for a long, long time.

Has anyone actually filed a complaint with the DA?

If not how can you knock DA Rice saying she is not doing her job.

If you people feel that strongly that charges should be pressed then you should be acting on it.

It is very simple. Contact the Nassau District Attorneys office with your request for an investigation.

Until that time you have no right to criticized DA Rice.

While I respect the Board and Administration, I am completely shocked that they are putting their reputations before the good of the students. They can hush the noise regarding this disgraceful report, but they cannot change the fact that proper procedure was not followed which makes their actions questionable. I believe the Board was blindsighted by Dr. Harrington and the Administration and now they are all in a bad situation. They will continue the year like nothing went wrong and the budget will fail because the community is tired of fighting their arrogant attitudes. If Dr. Harrington really cared for the district she would resign. If we were a stronger community we would have her fired. That is what would happen in the private sector. In the end our children and the taxpayers will suffer.

The intent of the Oyster Bay – East Norwich CSD, the board, administrators, teachers and support staff is to see that each of our students is given the opportunity to get the very best education possible so that they can be productive in our society.
I think that you have too much time on your hands.  You ought to do something a little more constructive and productive then knocking a district you know so little about.  I would suggest that you get a job.

Well, it looks like the only other district in Nassau County that will be seeing a greater school aid reduction than yours is......
Roslyn. I wonder why that's so.

Dear Mr. Jack Webb

I question your motivation. Why are you so interested in what happens in our community when it is listed under your name that you are from McLean, VA.

With all due respect, I stand by what I originally said. In order to start an investigation of this type a complaint “must” first be filed with the Nassau County District Attorneys Office.

If you feel that strongly about what happened at the Oyster Bay School District, you will file such a complaint. On the other hand, if you and members of our community do not file such a complaint, they should stop voicing their opinions here and on other sites, as it is going to have a negative impact on our whole community and its residents.

I listed the contact of the DA bellow.

Nassau County District Attorney’s Office
262 Old Country Road
Mineola, NY 11501

Or call (five one six – five seven one – three eight zero zero)

(Let us see your actions not hear your complaints, as it does nothing for anyone.)

I think your district's actions with regard to its finances has already taken care of that. It *may* not be about criminality, but it certainly is about *trust*. And in that area, your district has failed miserably. And you know what?Apparently the State thinks so, too. How else to explain the second highest percentage reduction in aid - second only to Roslyn?

Pliny if you feel so strongly about what happened at the Oyster Bay District then you should file a complaint with the district attorney. If you don’t you have no right to comment!
