It's not clear why Rodriguez, who stole the truck in Nassau County, ended up on the eastbound LIE where he was pulled over at the Exit 58 off ramp, DeMarco said.

"He admitted stealing the truck and taking cocaine, heroin and Xanax," the sheriff said. "He was so intoxicated, with drugs, he probably didn't know where he was."

More than 20 people from Long Island have been arrested for their involvement in two heroin rings responsible for bringing 1,000 bags of heroin to Suffolk County every six weeks, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota announced the arrests at a news conference in Hauppauge . Four people from Brooklyn and Queens , where Long Islanders travel to buy heroin, were also arrested. Click here for more on this story from News12 Long Island

"In 2009, it will be marked in the annals of law enforcement as the year heroin again found its way into Suffolk County," Spota said.

The key figure in Suffolk County was Michele Atkinson, 34, of West Babylon , Spota said.

Atkinson made trips to East New York and Richmond Hill to buy heroin in bundles, and returned to Suffolk to supply lower-level dealers with heroin, Spota said. One of those arrested on Long Island for purchasing heroin was 17 years old, he said.

Law enforcement "will do everything it can to dismantle the supply lines that are bringing these drugs into our community," Spota said.
