What pray-tell are you raving about?
In what state or part of the U.S. has it become illegal to own a firearm?

Maybe you can't own a gun because you're a lunatic.

I've never been a huge proponent for gun ownership. I think there are better self-defense options for homeowners and public safety. Europe seems to have a better handle on this than the U.S.

Well, since its in our constitution one cannot compare us to socialist Europe. No I don't own a gun, I do have the 22 page application which takes 6 months for approval which is a joke. Clearly a criminal just buys them illegaly off the street while I have to jump through hoops, pay a fee and wait 6 months to exercise my Constitutional right.

I can absolutely agree with you about gun ownership being a constitutional right, and Europe certainly has made it's own problems with liberalism. I have almost never seen a good outcome where guns are involved while growing up. My only point is that there has to be a better alternative.

You must be talking about the process to own a handgun.
All you need to own long guns(rifles, or shotguns) is to pass a quick FBI check. It takes about ten minutes--if that.
Yeah, criminals typically don't bother going through the legal process of buying handguns, but that's not much of a surprise is it?
"Socialist" Europe(and the rest of the world--not at war--for that matter) don't have nearly the amount of incidents of gun-violence that we happen to have here in the 'States. Clearly, our freedom is a two-edged sword.

How about a big dog or pepper spray, or mace, or a louisville slugger? Why is a gun the only solution?

Right, you take on an attacker with your bat,you may even have time to get it in a position to swing before you get shot.A dog?!! Bang,he's dead.Pepper spray? Please, just put a sign on your door that says "This home is open for looting, rape and murder.I refuse to protect my family or myself with the same tools the predators use".

I can't agree with you, even crazy people are afraid of dogs.

Apparently you've never met a crazy person with a gun, dogs don't scare them.Only another person shooting them will get their attention.

I would rather have a gun and not need one, than need one and not have it. In the same way that I would rather have 'EVERYONE' carrying a gun, than 'NO ONE' carrying a gun. At least if you have a gun,the odds are a little more even, than if you don't and have to rely on the police to be everywhere, every minute. And if people knew that 'EVERYBODY' had a gun,I think that they would be less likely to comitt crimes for fear of not knowing who else might have a gun on them.

This is a slightly confusing post, but to clarify I think what you're saying is you'd like it to be like the old west again.

After 6 months, and after they have done a criminal background check, and interviewed several of your references, some repeatedly, they will simply deny your permit.

As a rationale, they will say you don't need a gun. LOL. The People's Democratik Workers Paradise of NY, where criminals have guns, but law abiding citizens can't get a handgun.

A cop friend told me the way to go is to apply for a target license. Just make sure that the gun is always disassembled and locked when not at the range.

That's what I always did with my Mossberg when I lived in NY. It was always disassembled and locked. And I never lie. ;-)

I imagine it just makes one want to just go for the rifle and/or shotgun...since that you can buy without such permits. I imagine a shotgun would also make it easy to NOT miss who ever you are aiming at and in one shot you can take out 1-6 intruders in one shot! Cleanup is messy but I'm sure you can call surf-pro.
