Something's went wrong,here...when I graduated from HHS over 50 years ago..we had one of the finest music departments in the state,for instance ,now all this news about danger in going to school and paying half a million to three quarters of a million for a home...
I suppose it's all the fault of the Viet Nam War protesters..and I was thinking about going to a 50 year alumni banquet....good thing I stayed home...

Old Hempstead

I graduated fron the old high school on Greenwich Street in 1965 (before the natives burned it down). That school used to place kids in the ivy league schools and sevice acadamies year in and year out. We had parents who cared and didn't have serial adulterers and admitted drug abusers like Paterson for role models. Oh, and the class of '65 was the last class with a majority of caucasians in it. White flight was kicking in.

The reason Hempstead High has the problems it has is the lack of parenting skills, and not preparing children for school (schools are only partly responsable for our childrens education parents need to be there on every level) They talk about poverty it does not take money to work on the fundamentals of reading, math and outhers skills our children need to be prepared for school, For in not preparing these children we are setting them up to fail... Is that what parents want for there children?
i guess complaning about the system and doing nothing is what they are all about!

Parents need to go back to school in order to instill the right values to their kids. Stop the happy talk and compete! Money helps but there are many free ways to learn!

Its not the schools fault, its the parents. Drive by there to see what I mean. And I am a black man that had 2 parents and was punished when I wronged. ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!! The principal ought to have a sit down with the parents. Beyond that, the Mayor of Hempstead should take inspiration from this guy and run the Village the way principal runs the school.

A group of us were planning our 50th HHS reunion in '06. Myself and another woman went to the "new" school (we graduated from the original on Greenwich St.)and requested a meeting with Principal Stroughn. We were impressed with him and his imposing presence in the school. His secretary helped us arrange an afternoon at the school with a tour and attendance at a home football game at which we presented cash awards to 2 students of his choosing. When our rented school bus left that afternoon we agreed that although the kids may not come from the best environment, they were fortunate to have Reginald Stroughn care about them. He could mean the difference to many of them.

Like "Old Hempstead", I graduated in the '60's---1966 to be exact, and I totally agree with everything he (or she) writes! I get very upset when I read about how this once wonderful area has gone down the tubes. I have such wonderful childhood memories, and loved every one of my teachers so much I made it my life's work. I hope things improve for them.

The Village is in SHAMBLES-Mayor Hall is over his head and incompetent not to mention surrounded by Felon Trustee Pettus and his inept Chief Dixon. Corruption, conflicts of interest, harassment all swept under the rug! Chief Wing is a puppet. The school district is a joke! The problem is no discipline at home and no value for human life. Then DA Rice has a pilot program on Terrace Ave and doesnt give a rats ass about the real taxpaying citizens of the Village.

Hempstead can once again be the great school district. Parents,students and the Hempstead government need to unite as one. As a life long resident of Hempstead, I also remember the good times. We went to the parks,youth center or sometimes just out in the front yard for a good time.
Hempstead has many great people living and working everyday, but the people just seem to worship the negativity and ignore the positive things going on. How many of you know that the Salvation Army has a double dutch team that will be traveling to South Carolina in June for the championships. These young ladies all attend school in the Hempstead school district. Come out and support the school district, see what you can offer to help bring it up back up. Their are many meetings and programs where if just one person attended and brought one with them it would fill up and auditorium. All children need support along with the teachers. Once again not all is bad in the Village of Hempstead.

How high is the drop out rate at Hempstead High? In the double digits.
It should be a crime punishable by jail time for lies to be promoted as the truth.
Parents, stroughn, the faculty and school board are among the few criminals who have done very little to change the climate at Hempstead High School. The students who have done what they are suppose to do deserve the credit. As they daily forced to enter a building full of overpaid and morally bankrupted people these students continue to make strives.
When a former drunk, womanizer and cheat can get an award as principal of any year...the organization who has bestowed this should be brought into question.
A people...a community...a nation must be careful who they put in place of authority. These are people our children....your children may one day make their role models.
The shining light is clay is retiring. The question is how long will Hempstead High School have to wait for stroughn and others to hit the road?
