Fast food workers call for higher wages

MYFOXNY.COM -

Workers at some fast food restaurants in the New York City area walked off the job on Thursday.

A large group gathered outside a McDonald's on Madison and 40th St. in Manhattan demanding higher wages and the approval of a workers union.

"They're giving us $7.25 an hour, so many of my co-workers are living on food stamps. You can't live on that in this city," a protester told Good Day NY.

The workers who say they don't make enough to put food on the table for their families would like an increase in their hourly pay to $15.

Some franchise owners have said they'd have to hire fewer workers if the increase is approved.

According to The New York Times, McDonald's said in a statement that it values its employees and remains committed to them.

Union drives have been rare at fast food restaurants because turnover is high and few employees work full time.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Work UNION, live better!

The convenience store workers need to form a union as well, seriously!

And we need good labor unions globally, including in China, and we must support a labor movement in China when the time comes.

On the issue of saving and improving our world economy...

Here is a link for a very short video that I made about how to help to save and improve our world economy, I kept it really short and I left a lot of stuff out, but I was able to talk about a few things that I think are extremely important. I hope that you enjoy my video, and if you enjoy it then please share my video with other people on the world wide web, as that is the only way that we can get this message out there to people.

Here is the LINK...

And here is a link for a thread that I started on the Topix forum for the Washington Post pertaining how to save and improve our world economy...

Tony I just watched your video. What you forget to go to the gym today? Besides waking up to hit the snooze button on your alarm, did you ever do a sit up?

Look about your topic, you're way off base. In this country, which is a free market, you get paid based on hard you are to replace. Working in a fast food place, everyone is qualified, so wages will always be low. You can't just give them higher wages. Then you have to give higher wages to every other profession as well to compensate. This is madness and not how a free market works. These fast food jobs are good for teens or getting you thru college. These jobs were never created to be a lifelong career job. These deadbeats should have tried better during childood to give themselves a better future

Learn how to write, Limey.

And people who are honest, and who work hard, must be fairly rewarded, and they must be treated well.

Someone who is honest, and who works hard, is NOT a deadbeat.

And on the issue of my video, I work out, I bet that I am healthier than you, and I am fully correct, my logic is good.

You crazy americans are too much. Our country laughs at you for your open borders and re electing Obama. Fast food workers are treated fairly based off their job qualifications.

Ok Tony, so you wanted these workers treated fairly. Should the govt step in and tell the employer how much to pay the worker? This sounds like a dictatorship and not a free market society which is what we live in. Do these fast food employees have to work there? If they think they are worth more, then they should quit and look elsewhere for employment

unions are not the answer. they were helpful to employees years ago but now the are just as greedy as any other group in control.

if employees are complaining now about wages, wait until the union demands 2-3 percent of their pay for unions dues...

By following me around, you just lost 2 pals on the Yankee forum. Or if they decide not to be mad at you, that means both are dishonest and lack credibility. And why would you want pals like that? Lesson to be learned is stay out of my business

Some people make a career out of being a janitor, and a janitor who is in a union can earn enough money to support a family.

Being a cook and doing customer service are jobs that require more abilities than being a janitor, thus they should be paid more money than a janitor.

And the owners of the restaurants definitely care if the workers go on strike.

In fairness money is flatlining and minimum wages have no way risen to match the increased cost of living because of it. It's meant to allow you to eek out an existance and workers aren't able to eek any more.

Strains the company which will of course have massive layoffs in response. Shareholders are not kind little job creators they want a return because they too are taxed everywhere they move.

Maybe the gov should backout of things. Stop making the workers and company pay into dead SS program. There's a nice raise for your workers....to cash in the amount you actually see on the check instead of seeing your crumbs crumble even further.

In all honesty they should just form a gang and hijack the meat trucks and fight the feds of with burning fry oil. It would be interesting news and everyone would be well fed.

How much more would YOU be prepared to pay (in dollars and cents) for a cheeseburger and fries?

There are NO cooks in fast food ops. They push a button on a microwave (in case you never noticed), and they have computerized cash registers.

The only "service" by the customer service personnel is to say, "It's at the end of the corridor on the right".

Daily Horoscope for May 24

Libra

This is a fantastic day for using your brain with precision and accuracy. For instance, it's great for filling in a complicated form or going through some complex paperwork because you'll find it easy to concentrate on what you're doing. It's especially good for paying attention to the sort of finicky details that you normally aren't interested in but which are right up your street.
