It's nice and quiet here in the Bronx, now that all the noisy people moved out to L.I.

There is a bar in my neighborhood of rowhouses, and the guy next door is starting to have after hours "karaoke" parties for bar patrons in his rowhouse. Friday night at 1:30 AM I went over and asked one of the guests near the open door to turn down the music. The next night, the party started again about 2:00AM and lasted until 4:00AM. I called 311 three times. They said the cops were on the way, but they never showed up. At 4:00AM, I really cranked up my stereo for a couple of minutes to let them know I was awake. Talking to him is useless. I may file a formal complaint, since this has been going off and on for a couple of years and has really become worse in the last month or so.

Any lawyers out there with ideas? Should I go to the police department first? I might first send a letter to the Police Commissioner.

Last summer I was in my back yard with my leaf blower when I got a tap on my shoulder. It was this suffolk Police officer that has been harrassing me for the past 2 years. She gave me a ticket for using my leaf blower in MY backyard at about 9-930pm. I lost track of the time but I thought the noise law was up until 10pm. Does anyone know the actual law. It would help because this woman cop has been making our lives uncomfortable and we are building up a case but I would like to know the time, if anyone knows. thank you

Normally I fly off the handle BUT I am really trying to better myself. What I suggest is this.... knock on the door and try to explain to her that the walls are very thin and that you can hear everything. Try to make it like a joke! Say... "was everything ok the other night? I heard a loud bang and then running across the room." I would play it off like that. She will probably apologize and she might be more careful with all the yelling. If not, its out of spite then scream at her.(just kidding)

If you were my neighbor, and you were using a leaf blower on a weekday at 9:30pm, I'd very kindly offer you a rake and a broom instead.

And if you refused my offer, and insisted on using the blower at that hour, things would get ugly. Very ugly.

You say you were using it in MY yard as if that means anything. The sound doesn't stay in YOUR yard.

WTF are you using a blower at night anyway?

well it was the summer time and it just got dark. I dont complain when my neighbors are using their skillsaw at 10:30 at night. And things would not get ugly if you were my neighbor. What would you do? You might find a leafblower up your a**hole if you came over onto my property! That would be funny

Youíll have to check your town laws. Here, under Town of Oyster Bay law, itís 8-7 weekdays and 9-5 weekends for leaf blowers used by the homeowner. In my neighborhood a leaf blower at 9-9:30PM would be a big problem with the locals. To be honest, if you pulled that shitt here, a ticket would be the very least of your troubles. Were you really that inconsiderate to your neighbors?
well i guess that depends on the type of neighbors I have; doesn't it. They are very inconsiderate themselves. What would you do if your neighbor was doing the same thing. Im just curious.

A leafblower is nothing compaired to the parties that go on until 4am and all the noise that comes with that.

It depends all upon the neighbors and yourself. If you have that much disrespect for each other and yourselves then I guess you guys donít care how you live.
By your comments about whatís going on there, it seems like a less than desirable place to live. If youíre making noise because everyone else is, youíre only contributing to the problem and causing one yourself. Be the better man by finding out the laws, abiding by them and reporting offenders. Parties until 4AM? Is that all the time or the once a year BBQ party?
The only problem here has been with landscapers who have no respect for anyone. They are dealt with (some nicely). Those who do their own yard work do it during the day and clean up the mess.
Stop making a bad situation worse. Youíll avoid fines.
Good luck.
Oh please, were you ever doing work in the backyard and lost track of time? I have not used the leaf blower past 7pm since then but I never called the cops all the times parties were going on, so I am the bigger man. Its dark so late in the summer. Sometimes 9:15 and I was trying to finish up. I only had a little bit to go. I didnt think anyone would care. I guess I was wrong.

If I had small children and their bedtime was before 9:00 I'd complain about the blower and the skillsaw... noise is noise. The cop wouldn't even bother you if you knew what the law was and obeyed it, but yeah it is all the cops fault.

I see you take no personal responsibility but to blame others cause they are doing it too. Way to go sparky.

I believe the code enforcement did come by but what good will that do if charges arent filed? Something tells me they are planning another party!!
are you really that racist that you had to mention their race???? you are a bigot and a racist! it doesn't matter what color the person is that's making all this noise, if it were a person of your ethnicity or race, you wouldn't be complaining, because YOU yourself would be at that party!

I can top that. In spite of my ID showing Brooklyn, I do live on long island (South shore, Suffolk County). My Hispicnic neighbors carried on this past weekend as follows on their back deck --(usually every weekend but this was the worst)--
1. Loud, raucous shouting, screaming, arguing, drunken behavior, usually including young children screaming, fighting and shouting.
2. Loud, thumping Latino Salsa music blaring into other back yards (mostly mine).
3. The police were called by me (I waited until 1:00 a.m. given it was Saturday night. The dispatcher said someone would come by soon. At 2:00 a.m. I called again as there was no letup. The dispatcher said "Well, if they swing by and they don't hear any noise they are not going to knock on anyone's door". I said, well they need to come by again and listen to the noise throughout the neighborhood and get these people to quiet down. I stood down the block in my pajamas from 2:00 am to 2:45 a.m and finally the SCPD came by.
The police knocked on their door and apparently spoke with the loud, drunken householder. After they left he shut his backyard light and then proceeded to loudly scream and yell (so the whole neighborhood could hear his broken English -mostly Spanish)....."This is my house, my yard, I can do what I want, no one calls the F**KN police on me...I'll call my lawyer....etc".....
He then puts his bright backyard light on, loud music back on and brings out the bongo drums - I KID YOU NOT. I finally gave up and figured he would drop in a drunken stupor, which apparently he did about 1/2 hour later.
IS THIS QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ME -- THAT I SHOULD HAVE TO FALL ASLEEP AT 4:30 A.M. TO LOUD SHOUTING, MUSIC AND BONGO DRUMS ?????? What the hell are civilized AMERICANS supposed to do about this ????
And they call white people racist. These two groups are harassing the whites nearby. Hypocrites.

You're a touch guy behind the computer, but you're not very bright. Using that leaf blower on my block, at that hour, just wouldn't fly dude. You'd have 7 families on your arse, most especially the two cops on the block who often work midnight to 8 shifts whom you'd be waking.

It was done one time, shoot me. What about the people who do it over and over. All I asked on here is the noise law. The only fault of the cop is that she is a real bitch dike

Never had to deal with that. I did have to deal with living next door to a teenager learning how to be a professional DJ though back when I lived in Oceanside. That wasn't fun.

The music shook the walls and windows to our house until about 11-11:30 every weeknight. We complained as did another neighbor, but the parents refused to do anything about it. They said he was working as a DJ and had to practice, so they themselves walked around their own house with ear plugs. Actually, the father used muffs like you use at a shooting range.

Cops came once in a while, issued a few ordinance tickets, but didn't do much else. Eventually, I invited the kid over into my house so he could hear for himself what we had to live with.

He was pretty shocked, and from that day on, kept the volume down and all was settled peacefully.
