On the contrary, It's a piece of LI history.

I'm sorry that you don't feel a sense of pride for living on LI but some of us are very enamored with the duck.

It's been an icon on LI for almost 75 years.

In the 50's -60's it was like the "turning point" for folks headed to the Hamptons or Montauk from the city. Once you saw the duck you knew you were almost there.....

Welcome back home to the duck. I have photos from the 50's when I was little in front of the duck, then I have photo's in the 80's of my grandchildren in front of the duck. It is a historical landmark not to be forgotten.

Was it worth it? That was probably one big bill. Long Island has to keep its costs down or it is a dead duck. Really all my friends have left, every person I grew up with. Quack, quack what does that tell you.

they used to cook LI ducks inside that thing. That was disgusting. I'm glad they moved it. They should have sent it to the Flanders across the ocean

The Long Island Duck was regulated out of existence. As a boy I saw the world's largest duck farm, Warners located where the Suffolk County Golf Course is today. The riverfront was filled with Peking Ducks, and the Flanders Bay had a permenant 'Red Tide' from the high nitrogen content of the water because of the Duck manure. Eating 'Duck' was a delight many people sought out. the Southampton Restaurant, "John Duck's" was Famous for its' Duck dinners, hence the name.

Given a choice between the Ducks or the golfers, I'll take the Ducks everytime.

The Duck is total Americana from a bygone era. As a kid our family visited the duck many times. My dad bought duck eggs from there. We got a pet duck from the area. Then we got a drake (male duck) for our duck. She killed him and two others before she came down with limber neck disease. We took her in a box to a vet who gave her some medicine. She eventually recovered. So I have a special spot in my heart for the Big Duck.
