The following seems to dispute your contention.

"Revenue and Taxation Code section 17041 imposes an income tax on every individual who is in California for more than a temporary or transitory purpose, i.e., residents, and those individuals who derive income from sources located in this state. Every individual, subject to applicable California filing requirements, whether a state citizen, sovereign California citizen, self-statused free born American, nonresident, nonimmigrant nontaxpayer, nonenfranchised individual, nonresident alien residing in this state, or domiciled inhabitant, is required to file a tax return under Revenue and Taxation Code section 18501. Your presence within this state is sufficient to generate the tax reporting obligations (Appeal of Beldon Katleman, SBE, Oct. 17, 1980). Thus, any claim of exemption from personal income taxes is void. There is an explicit requirement for the filing of tax returns and paying the tax. As a taxpayer, defined under R&T Code section 17004, you may be liable for state income taxes as well as interest and penalties for noncompliance.

As stated above, California law defines who is required to file a tax return, as well as tax liability obligations. Attempts to portray oneself as a "nonteaxpayer" "sovereign citizen," or "freeborn and natural individual" with immunity from taxation lack legal support, and are ineffective claims against the proper assessment and collection of taxes.(See, US v. Studley (9th Cir. 1986) 783 F. 2d 934.) California tax liability is dependent upon California contacts and/or California source income, and California will continue to enforce tax obligations notwithstanding self-characterizations of no-taxpayer (sic) status or sovereign citizenship."

Why the hell did Superman prevent Lex Luthor and his scheme to sabotage a pair of nuclear missiles and use them to create an earthquake that will wipe out the California coastline? Now I'm depressed.

Orignally I owed $180 but with interest it's was now up to $260. They said I should mail in the $260 ASAP to avoid further interest. I also could report to the nearest IRS Office within 60 days. I sent them the $260.
Whenever I see folks owing the IRS thousands of $$$ and for many years no less! IT P I S S E S ME OFF!!!
No where does it say these people owe any money to the IRS.

Molly, you are correct, it wasn't the IRS-it was the State of Ca. But my lament stays the same. BTW, I lived in Ca. for 12 yrs. I got tired of supporting 2 welfare familes and 16 refugees with all the taxes taken from my pay, so I quit my job and got the hell out of there.

If you both read the story, it was the state of California, NOT THE IRS, that published those that have a tax debt...
OK NYStateOfMind, it wasn't the IRS, but these folks still have a tax debt and they seem to get away with it too. Does the name Wesley Snipes ring a bell. Damn good actor, but not exactly a solid citizen on paying his taxes.

BTW, I have no idea what the California laws are but there are no federal laws on the books that can enable legal prosecution if you don't pay federal taxes to the IRS.

Another tax evader heard from. Check out the IRS website, it has a whole section devoted to tax myths like the one you just claimed. Or if you prefer, you could just ask someone who is in federal prison serving time for tax evasion whether they agree with what you said!

Can I take a guess? Our armed forces, federal courts and law enforcement, the FAA, the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control, the Public Health Service, the National Parks Service, the NTSB, farm subsidies, our federal civil service, and the expenses of maintaining our federal government, namely, the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches, in general. Plus aid to state and local governments, and a bunch of other stuff. How did I do?
