Hi, I hope the title of this post doesn't produce any knee-jerk reactions but this is a serious question. I'm from Edinburgh in Scotland but work for a London based investment bank and as such spend 3-4 months a year in the US. My American colleagues who work in London often talk about how people here seem to be much more aware of the worlds problems, cultures, geography, history, religions etc.. Than they are in America. Initially I disbelieved this as all the Americans I work with seemed pretty clued up and aware as well as being committed skilled workers. However as I spend more time in the US it amazes me at how little the majority of Americans know about the rest of the world. I have been told by at least 6 different people that sadaam Hussein was the leader of al-qaeda. 2 people thought Scotland was a former soviet state. My colleagues from London have been complimented several times on how well they speak English(?). Obviously every country in the world has their fair share if ignorant people but all this has came from highly educated people in responsible jobs. Really just wondering why this is? Does the American education system not believe in teaching people about other cultures?

LOL....

the older generation of americans are pretty well educated on what's going on.
today's generation, not to much. computers and ipads, etc do all the thinking for them. not much brain use anymore, unfortunately.
todays kids are all into themselves, just like at the OWS protestors. do they really think their doing good, or out to cause trouble? maybe alittle of both...

Not a single schoolkid is allowed to 'fail' any more. so the 'system' releases failures into the world. Perhaps you ran into a couple of the finer products of our current educational system.

They don't appear smarter in Greece and Italy when it comes to economics. Closely followed by Spain, Portugal, and Ireland. And the Muslim takeover of Europe continues, which further calls into question how "smart" Europeans are.

Fair point,..
It must be great having no 'sub-prime' economic crisis in the US then...?
Plus, what's wrong with Muslims?
In the UK they're respected and valued citizens who have certainly not tried to 'take over'...
One or two extremists perhaps but this is true of all religions, especially the far-right fundamental Christians...

Note that i'm trying to be respectful. Intelligence as nothing to do with economy. I believe that, though in a terrible economic state, we aren't going to loose our.. Let's say 'spirit' of an unstopping knowledge-seeking (I admit that i'm not the most imparcial person concerning this matter[I'm proudly portuguese]). Regarding the muslims I think you are being extremely improper and xenophobe, at least. The islamic culture that isn't extremist must be accepted. I'm catholic (remember that both of our sides killed thousands of men and women in war) and I have absolutely no problem with them. Finaly I think people that resemble you cause me a deep sadness. A beautiful country (lanscape) mustn't be ruined by it's people and their mentality. You haven't evovoled and while some functional socialist democracies in Europe appeared you remained beloved by Nixon. Regretful.

Americans do not have the bigger education level than Europeans. It is true that European people are more inteligent than Americans. American children tend to believe in ghosts or so even 12 years old. America does not have a right education system! The learn only about themselves and tend to think only about themselves. That is why people don't like them. Why does America get all the new stuff discovered: Lol. Europe invented power-usage tehniques, cars, handguns, and it's education system, IQ and discoveries and inventions are much better than Americans. The problem is in not caring for stuff of Americans! You cannot say you invented everything and you rule the world. That is a sign of communism. And you cannot say Britain is he whole Europe because it is not. It is like saying Canada is the Whole South and North America.
I'm not saying Americans are bad, but their will is. They bragg too much of their freedom of speech or so. The problem of yours is not caring for the IQ and intrest drop, the obessity of the Citizen. And you only think about yourself. MAYBE if you show support to anybody you may get help or atleast an "like" from somebody. And stop insulting Canadians.

Generally, Americans are self absorbed. As a whole we tend to only care for issues that affect us directly.

With that said, America is large and has a diversity unmatched by anywhere else in the world. So, to make an assumption on the whole based on a few is foolish.

Well, this is an old thread, but maybe my comment will go through? I think what a lot of people don't realize is that in the US there's a lot of nepotism, so the smartest people don't necessarily go to college or get the top-level jobs. Often people go to college 'cause their parents are rich and can afford to send them.(Poor people & many middle class people can't afford to go to college/university here in the US anymore.) Also the primary schools in poor neighborhoods don't even offer the same quality and level of education as the schools located in the affluent neighborhoods, so poor kids never have a chance in this supposedly "free" country.

Wealthy people make sure their kids get the best jobs. Poor people will just work as janitors and receptionists all their lives--regardless of how intelligent they are. In the US, there are thousands of highly intelligent people who live in poverty and many stupid, incompetent people who are in management or positions of power just because their rich relatives used their connections to secure them the jobs.

This is depressing, of course. So the average American sits around watching TV all day to take his/her mind off it all, so they get dumbed down even further by the nonsense that is on TV.

We've been taken over by big business/big money people and 70% of us have no say in public policy whatsoever, so please don't judge the US by the rich jerks who are in power. There are lots of us who don't have power who want to make things better but we can't.

I aspire to be an assistant to the assistant to the principal. I should have no financial worries should I ever get that job.

If we consider this profoundly, the question that comes first is , what is education. Three ways to acquire knowlege are contextually, componentially and experientially which is in fact the Sternberg's Triarchic Theory of Intelligence. I will put different terms in the same order as above, practical, analytical, and creative. We are all different in our understanding and learning process, micro-geographically influenced. So, my point is that if we view the lack of education or ignorance as a major problem, the solution I can offer you personally is be thankful if you know you have the capacity to pursue your valuable goals and if teaching is on your shoulders, if you stumble upon an opportunity to correct or inform someone, do it humbly and without hesitation.
