Avella is not a "fierce animal rights advocate" - what a joke.

The truth is, he gloms onto sexy, high-profile issues that qualify as political footballs to get face-time with the press.

The animal issues are guaranteed to do that - and he gets the undying support of humaniacs who open their wallets while weeping with gratitude.

I met Avella, I had my little 14 week old puppy with me. He was like a scared toddler, reaching his hand out tentatively, awkwardly trying to pat the dog's head, all the while asking "will he bite me?" LMAO Yeah, animal lover my Aunt Fanny.

Avella is a mushmouth know-nothing who has no shot at Mayor. The sooner he disappears the better for everybody.

You're basing your claim that Avella is not a 'fierce animal rights advocate' because of how he reacted to your own pet? Please, if you have something with a bit more substance I'd love to read it, because your one example is not exactly stellar.

As someone that's been working for the betterment of our own Dog Park here in Whitestone for the past few years, I know personally that Mr. Avella has been a great force in helping us get the attention we needed. While others have ignored us, Mr. Avella did not. For that he has my gratitude. I don't really care how he acts around my two dogs, it's never even been an issue!

Good luck to you Councilman Avella!

Michaeleen Flynn (not his real name) trolls the internet looking for articles about carriage horses or his nemesis Tony Avella so he can make negative comments and hope that people believe him. But this bozo has no credibility because he hides behind a made up name. He is one of the thug carriage drivers who spoil New York City and make it ugly.
Avella has torn the lid off the corruption and inhumanity in the industry, but because of political connected (Christine Quinn) life goes on.
This is an industry that exploits horses to make a buck and it is all tax free.
Tony Avella, on the other hand won the mayoral forum at the Working Families Party the other night. Hands down. People love him because he has ethics and integrity. That is something the carriage drivers know nothing about.
Michaeleen: I believe Mr. Avella is going to win. He is the people's candidate. There is a movement afloat that you cannot control. And even if he does not, there is another initiative that would replace horse carriages with electric cars.
Honey, your days are numbered. Better start packing now.

JMchavez - A little reading comprehension is in order.

I laid out the reasons Avella chooses high-profile issues like the carriages.

And if he's helped you with your issues, that's great. He's a public servant, that's what he should be doing, not trying to put people out of business and being the political whore that he is.

Tony Avella has my vote. I hope and pray that we can get the truth out about Bloomberg in time to elect Councilmember Avella mayor. If New Yorkers knew everything, Avella would win. Thompson is a lackluster candidate, but Avella is firing up the populace with his anit-Bloomberg message of save the neighborhoods of New York from overdevelopment, save the small businesses from Bloomberg-nonattested corruption, save the animals from partisan, unbelievable "no" votes on the part of the City Council in the pocket of the mayor. Sprinklers in pet stores? Not a "no brainer?!?" No, not according to the Council who votes the mayor and Quinn's bidding. These people must go. Support a man with courage and conviction for people and animals--Tony Avella.

Thank you, Ms. Kugler, AP, and Newsday for finally covering the only man who is running a true campaign on the issues--Tony Avella.

Avella squarely won the Working Families Party mayoral forum last week, by all accounts--as anyone can fairly determine with a rudimentary search of the Web, the newspapers, the blogs, and firsthand accounts. The webcast is available online--see for yourselves.

Bloomberg's seamy attempts to buy himself another election are distasteful at best. In candidate Avella we have a strong, courageous, compassionate and smart contender to lead this city.

Anyone with the moxie to get educated about the issues that matter to NYC residents would do well to turn off the TV, boycott the Bloomberg propaganda machine and see what educators are saying about Tony Avella. Or find out where he stands on any number of issues. His record speaks for itself: He is a public servant above all the others.

Thompson only WISHES he could say that he does not accept campaign contributions from real estate developers, unlike Avella--who puts his money where his mouth is.

Avella is for the people of New York City. And I for one am looking forward to the day when NYC has a compassionate mayor who doesn't despise wildlife and companion pets, or allow the corrupt, dangerous, and inhumane carriage industry to go on any longer. Avella is a champion of our neighborhoods, our small businesses, and our people.

I am proud to support Tony Avella.

Thank you Newsday! It's about time we see the only true newsworthy Mayoral Contender in print! Avella is the only one with enough courage and ethics to make a real positive impact on NYC. Bloomberg is not accessible to the public, by creating the 311 fiasco, he's made it comfortable for himself not to have to hear us! We aren't stupid Bloomberg! And Avella has my vote, he is the only one that addresses community problems, and the only one who gives a damn apparently!

Michaleenflynn is wired! Always online, with the Google news alerts.(Jokes about soy lattes notwithstanding, flynn, I think you might want to step away from the caffeine and try an herbal tea. You are a bundle of nerves.)

It obviously frustrates you to see that Tony Avella is gaining great momentum every day with his stands on all the important issues. I'm sympathetic to your plight but you cannot distract by going off on a tangent or waging a vendetta against those whose views you oppose.

Tony Avella is very much in the race, having outshined his opponents at the mayoral forum--on every single issue that was raised. And he's unstoppable when it comes to winning over individuals and communities, every day. People are thrilled at the prospect of no more politics-as-usual. I dare NYC residents to learn the truth about Bloomberg and not look for an intelligent alternative. Let's not forget his extension of term limits by fiat, a disgrace and a debacle and reason enough to give him the boot with no questions asked.

The fellow quoted in the AP story got it right--mayoral candidate Tony Avella has "fire in the belly" and he cares about this city and all its inhabitants. And New Yorkers are loving it.

Great job, Tony!(See ya, Joel!)

One would think that after the fiasco in the State Senate with these Jokers who have no term limits that people would understand better what "politics as usual" or the "political machine" means. I hope all of these bums are voted out of office next election. It is the Democratic establishment that supports Bill Thompson, the machine candidate .... against bloomberg who changes parties depending on how the wind is blowing to "better" his chances of buying the election to prop up his dough.

The grass roots. i.e. the people and community activists who really make up the fabric city, love Tony. Let’s get honesty and integrity into government! Vote Tony Avella in the September primary.

BTW Flynn ... You're a Disgrace! LMAO!

Mr. Avella is quite simply the man for the job. I love it when people meet him for the first time, and the sense of wonder they have at the prospect of a mayor who cares about the people--and all the city's inhabitants.

Well done, Mr. Avella. Gotta tell you, though, having a smart and caring mayor will take some getting used to after the geese-slaying, homeless enemy #1, bulldozing, term-limit disrespecting, small business tormenting, children-hating, Ninth Avenue traffic-jam-causing, phone-throwing, rich people-loving, disgraceful little man that is Bloomberg. He should go already.

WFP is the same organization that endorsed the slush fund princess, Christine Quinn...and that wimped out on the term limits issue.

Big surprise that WFP goes with the machine candidate.

Avella won where it matters--with the people! By every published account, Avella was the most well-received of the three.
