Love the place and the location. He was a good guy who took on the moron politicos who if not for their last names or ass kissing ability, would be fast food workers, at best.

I had many fantastic times at the OBI. The Halloween costume parties were the best! I even met a few great guys there as well..including my husband! Thank you Bob. Don't forget the bunge jumping platform after midnight!!!

He was the best of the best bar operator of his time. He had the balls and the cashflow to standup to bigtime authority, if you leaned on him, he fought you usually in public and in the papers which gererated publicity and brought sympathy and even more customers. My hat is off to ya Bob. If you see Robert Moses tell him he lost. Tony Noto says goodby. YOU are the man.

Good riddance to a man who did not raise any kind of true standards for Long Islanders. How common - one of a thousand bar holes that smell like puke and urine. I'm glad for the sake of young people that places like this should come to an end. I feel sorry for this man that he never found anything more meaningful in life.
Sounds like you hang out in a lot of bars.

I too am one of the many who had fantastic times there. Sunday afternoons in the winter were a great place to go on a date and drink bloody marys and sit by the fireplace.

Thanks for the memories.

I bartended there for two years in the late 80's (which was a long career working for him) and the man was a complete, ruthless psycho..... He hated just about everyone and would fire someone for the slighest reason..... It was very sad to watch someone with all that money be so miserable..He provided me with a life's lesson I'll never forget..Hope he can finally rest in peace.

I remember having our car tires slashed by his employees, people urinating off our deck, drunks running over people in the parking lot. The fire trucks not being able to respond to our neighborhood due to all the illegally parked cars. Him trying to run an drainage pipe from his cesspool directly into Fire Island Inlet. I don't wish death on anyone but I did not shed a tear when they tore the OBI down

When I was a child, one year, my family did not have alot of money for Christmas - and Bobby gave us money for our rent and for toys.

I have a child's memory of him, but even in that, he was eccentric, extravagant, and wild. And, thank God for him, and those like him. He made the world a more exciting and wonderful place. And he was kind to children. God bless Bobby.

I'll always remember the memories of the OBI. It was a great place and run very well.

Bob Matherson was peculiar and looked for problems where there were none. In a reverse angle, he tried to say he was being persecuted by local, state, and fed agencies as an advertising tool. It was all b.s.

The insiders who worked the facility will confirm heavy cocaine use after hours in the bar. Maybe this consumed Bob in paranoia. I will not continue further with anything negative in respect for his son.

Donnie Hondo-thanks for the great times.
