And by the time the 2007 Mets completed the most ignominious regular-season collapse in the history of sports, it had become an .embarrassment. So this year, wisely, the Mets' marketing department has put a ...

It's pre-season, you moron. Matthews seemingly jumps at any opportunity to write something negative. He also never reports anything new, like breaking news or something that would require investigation, or work. Just take something everybody knows about and complain about it.

Geez...this year's team not looking so good? It's March 3rd!! Time for Wally to go back to the Boxing beat. We've seen the best of Beltran? He's past his prime? He just turned 30! What about Maine, Perez, Heilman, Pelfrey, et al? Does their youth get in the way of his cockeyed reasoning? He's at his muckraking worst again-railing about things beyond his scope of knowledge. This is baseball, Wally. Stick to you stories where you champion the poor chop shop thieves being displaced by Citi Field.

Cali Islander. Shut up. If he were to criticize your team every time he writes and article you'd get annoyed too. He is a Mets beat writer who never has a good thing to say about the team he covers. He had written an article stating that the Mets needed to do whatever it took for them to get Johan even trading Jose Reyes. So I guess he would rather the Mets have traded Reyes, F. Martinez, and Pelfrey instead of who Omar gave up. Omar got his team the best starting pitcher in the game for some maybe prospects and still he complains. Allie is right. He talks as if Beltran is 1 year from retirement. This team has plenty of youth and will be fine. I agree with Willie. Better getting the injuries out of the way now instead of September. It is only MARCH 3RD.

The average age of the Mets probable 25 man roster is 30.2

Beltran just turned 30. Matthews thinks his best days are behind him? Why does Newsday employ so many hack writers?

Maybe, maybe not, but one could make the argument that negative comments about the article are justified. The man did not make a vald point about anything he said. It looks like he wrote this article over a plate of Egg Foo Yung so that there were words in print after his name by deadline. No effort went into it whatsoever, certainly no journaliism.

Dear Wallace matthews:

You were at one time a journalist filled with vision. It is sad to witness a writer who is reduced to the level of a one joke comic. You sir are irrelevant. Where were you when the giants were winning the super bowl? I think the answer is the mets have derailed your career

Cali - this isn't criticism, this is first rate hack. Not a piece of information in it, and not worth the time replying to you or Newsday.

What a shocker a negative article about the Mets from cranky Wally. This character should be banned from writing about the Mets because it is never objective.

C'mon man. Wally never, ever got the vision thing. He was a hack boxing writer who became a low-rent replacement after Newsday "downsized" their real sports journalists.

A slogan for Wally's world:

So it's just the standard Wallace Matthews piece, then.

Oh well. I want to be a writer one day, and Wallace Matthews gives me hope: if he can get paid to write, anyone can.

How did this mush-brained idiot even get a job writing in the first place? I am continually appalled by his Met-hating agenda, but the most perplexing part is the way he makes wild assertions and then fails to back them up with any evidence at all. I am a very nice person, but I would sincerely celebrate if this guy died a horrible death. Newsday, surely you can find someone else to write about the Mets. This enemy of baseball has no right to disgrace the game the way he does. Hire someone who deserves to write about baseball for a living!!!

This guy Matthews sounds like a Yankees' fan ~ bitter at the prospect that the House that George built will continue to be bested by a much better-run crosstown rival. It'll be even better when Johan Santana turns out a superb year to rub it in their faces.
