FREEPORT, N.Y.- Police said a New York man who faked his drowning death off a Long Island beach was arrested again Wednesday for allegedly impersonating a police officer and ordering a women to get into his van.
Raymond Roth, 48, was arrested on charges of criminal impersonation, attempted kidnapping and attempted burglary. He's due to be arraigned Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead. His lawyer said Roth will plead not guilty to the new charges.
Police said Roth identified himself as an officer on March 21 and demanded a woman to get into his van in Freeport. The woman refused and ran into a check-cashing facility for safety. Roth followed her into the facility but fled before police arrived, authorities said.
Hours before the incident, Roth accepted a plea bargain in the fake-drowning case that included a 90-day jail sentence. He pleaded guilty to fourth-degree conspiracy.
He and his son, 22-year-old Jonathan Roth, plotted to collect about $400,000 in life insurance, prosecutors said.

Rutgers University has fired coach Mike Rice less than 24 hours after ESPN's Outside the Lines aired video footage of Rice physically abusing players, the school announced on Wednesday morning.

"Based upon recently revealed information and a review of previously discovered issues, Rutgers has terminated the contract of Mike Rice," the school statement read.

"WE" Me Free.

NEW YORK -- Jeffrey Skilling, the former chief executive of defunct energy giant Enron Corp., could win early release from prison in a deal with the Justice Department, according to a report Thursday.

CNBC said Skilling's attorneys and the Justice Department were discussing a deal, but that it was unclear how much his sentence could be shortened. Skilling, who was convicted on charges of conspiracy, fraud and insider trading, has been serving a 24-year sentence since 2006.

Quiz: How well do you remember 2012?

In 2010, the statute used to win Skilling's conviction was found to be unconstitutionally vague by the U.S. Supreme Court. The court's ruling narrowed but did not overturn the federal "honest services" law, which the federal government has used in prosecutions of politicians and business leaders.

An federal appeals court later affirmed Skilling's convictions, and last year the high court declined to hear Skilling’s appeal of that ruling.

CNBC noted that the Justice Department has posted a notice alerting victims in the Enron case about the sentencing talks. A Justice Department spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The notice, posted on the department's website, asks for victims' views on a sentencing agreement with Skilling by April 17.

Before its collapse, Enron played a key role in California's energy crisis more than a decade ago

This is how "WE" WORK

Multinational corporations have built their businesses on the backs of American taxpayers. They've depended on government research, national defense, the legal and educational systems, and our infrastructure.

Yet they've turned around and mocked us with declining tax payments. They've cut workers. They've refused to invest their massive profits in job-producing research and development. And they've insulted existing employees with low wages and dwindling retirement support.

As a final disdainful act, many of them have tried to convince us that they LOSE money in the U.S. while only making profits overseas.

Christine Quinn's lead in the crowded race for New York mayor is slipping, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The City Council speaker — who has been the focus of blistering attacks by her opponents — leads the Democratic primary contest with 32 percent support in the latest Quinnipiac poll. But that’s down from 37 percent in February and is her lowest number in five months.

When "WE" goes wrong it sets off bombs.

Authorities investigating the Boston Marathon bombing said Wednesday they have the face but not the name of someone seen on video leaving a black bag near the scene of the blasts.

The person was seen on a surveillance camera from a Lord & Taylor department store, one official said.

The FBI, Boston police, the U.S. attorney in Boston, a senior White House official and other NBC News sources all said there had not been an arrest. The statements came after several media outlets reported an arrest in the case.

“Despite reports to the contrary there has not been an arrest in the Marathon attack,” Boston police said from an official Twitter account.

First comes the "WE" and then comes the BOOM!!!!

The fertilizer plant that exploded on Wednesday, obliterating part of a small Texas town and killing at least 14 people, had last year been storing 1,350 times the amount of ammonium nitrate that would normally trigger safety oversight by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Yet a person familiar with DHS operations said the company that owns the plant, West Fertilizer, did not tell the agency about the potentially explosive fertilizer as it is required to do, leaving one of the principal regulators of ammonium nitrate - which can also be used in bomb making - unaware of any danger there.

Fertilizer plants and depots must report to the DHS when they hold 400 lb (180 kg) or more of the substance. Filings this year with the Texas Department of State Health Services, which weren't shared with DHS, show the plant had 270 tons of it on hand last year.

A U.S. congressman and several safety experts called into question on Friday whether incomplete disclosure or regulatory gridlock may have contributed to the disaster.

"It seems this manufacturer was willfully off the grid," Rep. Bennie Thompson,(D-MS), ranking member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, said in a statement. "This facility was known to have chemicals well above the threshold amount to be regulated under the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards Act (CFATS), yet we understand that DHS did not even know the plant existed until it blew up."

Family members of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre are lashing out at Senate opponents of tougher gun laws, accusing them of "cowardice" just days after lawmakers blocked legislation designed to fight gun violence.

"I'm honestly disgusted that there were so many senators that are doing nothing about the fact that my mom was gunned down in her elementary school. It's grossly unfair to the family members of Newtown, as well as all other gun violence victims," Erica Lafferty, the daughter of Sandy Hook principal Dawn Hochsprung, who was killed in the rampage, told CBS’s Bob Schieffer Sunday on "Face the Nation."

wHEN "WE" GOES Wrong!

There are few Americans -- if any but extremist Armageddon (of any religion) and anti-government militia supporters -- who feel anything but the deepest of sorrow for the victims of the Boston Marathon apparent religious act of terrorism – conducted by what appear to be a radicalized permanent resident and his younger brother, an American citizen. It was -- as was 9/11 -- a heinous, shocking act.

But the insightful Juan Cole puts into perspective that most followers of Islam are peaceful people. The Jihadists and their networks compose a small percentage of believers in the Islamic faith.

Perhaps it is a little too early to start comparing the death tolls caused by different religious faiths in the last 100 years, but Cole takes a stab at it -- and this is what he finds. In the 20th Century, of the estimated (and this is hardly a firm figure, understated if anything) 120 million people who were killed in wars and war-like acts (terrorism is war, generally upon civilians, by a non nation-state) only a small fraction of that figure was the result of Muslim killings. Cole offers a chart that visually displays the dramatic lopsided accountability of Christian nations: mostly those located in Europe plus the US and Canada.

Many Americans will react with dismay that Cole is setting the record straight. But it is vital to point out that he condemns terrorism and war for empire of any sort. He is simply pointing out that to think that Christianity and Christian nations are more virtuous and less blood thirsty than followers of Islam is statistically incorrect. As Cole concludes in his commentary on relative blood lust in the name of a divine force or nationhood,

Terrorism is a tactic of extremists within each religion, and within secular religions of Marxism or nationalism. No religion, including Islam, preaches indiscriminate violence against innocents.

It takes a peculiar sort of blindness to see Christians of European heritage as “nice” and Muslims and inherently violent, given the twentieth century death toll I mentioned above. Human beings are human beings and the species is too young and too interconnected to have differentiated much from group to group. People resort to violence out of ambition or grievance, and the more powerful they are, the more violence they seem to commit. The good news is that the number of wars is declining over time, and World War II, the biggest charnel house in history, hasn’t been repeated.

Nothing can further exemplify the deep roots of a Christian need to force others to accept Jesus Christ as savior than the gory, bloody rampage of the Crusades, which over years left countless "infidels" slain. Or one can look at the inquisition where non-believers in Christ were tortured and executed.

Add to that, just for the sake of example, the missionary slaughter that took place when Spain and Portugal colonized Central and South America for Christ (and gold and other riches). Or the savagery of European Christian nations conquering Africa and engaging in slavery.

No, there are no excuses or sympathy to be expressed for the Tsarnaev brothers. Their act was horrifying, incomprehensible – causing the most profound grief at a finish line that is a symbol of triumph. So are the acts of suicide bombers, bombers of buses, etc. Public acts of terrorism are gruesome, terrifying and heart-wrenching; but so are many acts of war in the name of nationhood, ethnic identity, religion -- often all of these together.

When "WE" goes wrong..........you get screwed

Staff at elite private school Horace Mann abused at least 25 students between 1962 and 1996, and neither the staffers nor the school can be prosecuted for it because of the then-statute of limitations, the Bronx District Attorney's office revealed Friday.

Following a bombshell revelation by the New York Times Magazine about abuse at the Riverdale pre-K-12 school, members of the NYPD and the Bronx District Attorney's Office Child Abuse and Special Victims Squad spent close to a year fielding calls and traveling around the country, they said. The investigation concluded in April.

They found "a systematic pattern of alleged abuse" that unearthed more than 25 victims, some as young as 11 years old, and at least 12 separate abusers, prosecutors said.

"The reported abuse ranges from what may be characterized as inappropriate behavior to child endangerment, actual instances of sexual contact, sexual intercourse and criminal sexual acts," the DA's office said.

But because the abuse took place before the statute of limitations on sex abuse was extended to beyond five years, all of the cases are unable to be prosecuted criminally, officials said in a press release.

"I want to make sure that everyone knows that the statute of limitations on child sexual abuse is a device that protects criminals," said victim Edward Bowen, who said he was abused at 16 years old by music teacher Johannes Somary, who has since died.

More recent changes to the law, which eliminated the statute of limitations on felony sexual offenses, do not apply to the cases, prosecutors said.

When "WE" gOES Wrong!

Amid calls for a Vatican investigation, Newark Archbishop John J. Myers is facing fierce criticism for his handling of a priest who attended youth retreats and heard confessions from minors in defiance of a court-ordered lifetime ban on ministry to children.

At St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colts Neck, where the Rev. Michael Fugee had been spending time with a youth group, angry parishioners said they were never told about Fugee’s background, and they questioned Myers’ defense of the priest, the subject of a lengthy story in The Star-Ledger.

“It’s complete craziness that the church can let this happen,” said John Santulli, 38, a father of two at St. Mary’s.“I’m a softball coach, and I need a background check just to get on the field. Every single person I spoke to today said,’Oh my God. I didn’t know about this.’ It’s incomprehensible.”

Fugee, 52, is a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark and under Myers’ supervision. His work at St. Mary’s, however, was in the neighboring Diocese of Trenton, where Bishop David O’Connell has ordered the pastor of St. Mary to bar Fugee from any church activities, a spokeswoman said in a statement.

Can "WE" dig it and just our justice system?

A Brooklyn lawyer who turned out to be Manhattan’s notorious serial “Gentleman Groper” got a wrist-slap, no-jail sentence yesterday that may let him even keep his law license.

Paul Kraft, 31, had pleaded guilty in March to a string of five between-the-leg gropings of random pedestrian women on the Upper East Side and lower Manhattan last year.

A wrong man was initially collared last year, before Kraft was busted in December and admitted to the attacks.

Prosecutors had cited Kraft’s lack of criminal history and that he had taken responsibility for his actions in agreeing to the plea deal, which dismissed the top count of unlawful surveillance — for his allegedly putting his cellphone under the skirt of one woman.
