I put in a Section 8 application when tons of people were freezing outside waiting. I went to my appointments and did everything I had to. Now i'm left to wonder if it will ever go through. I live in a one bedroom with my three kids. My son 9, and my two gaughters are 6 and 3. How crowded is that. Well I'm on PA and every now and then something happens to my case and it ends up sanctioned. I went to several fair hearings and won but nothing happens. The program that helps me with my rent is Feps but just like I was in a shelter and came out with HSP, I was facing being evicted and now again. I have to wonder if this city is really trying to help us or just make us stuck. It's funny how victims of Domestic Violence either now or was still have to fear if they would be able to make it on their own. 3164 Grand Concourse #4B. Yeah this building is a walkup and falling and hurting my back twice already seems like I can't get any help.

Look, I really admire those of you who are living in poverty and are attempting to acquire an education. I did the same thing and know how hard it can be. However, I find it astonishing that many of the people on this thread have mentioned that they are single parents of multiple children. Don't you see that producing more children than you can support, with daddy as an afterthought, is what's keeping you in poverty? I see this same mistake being committed generation after generation after generation. This is what keeps you from ever being able to fully pay for your OWN housing (and food, etc.). When will people look at those around them and learn from their errors? It seems so simple, yet apparently it is beyond the comprehension of many. It is okay to use birth control. Better yet, don't sleep around so indiscriminately. I can't even imagine the diseases that must be making the rounds amongst these people, given the apparent lack of condom use. Anyway, I digress.

I agree with the poster from Texas. I believe that many people in the NY area will never get out of poverty because they refuse to leave the area (i.e. their comfort zone). Let's face it, this is an expensive city. If you can't make enough money to clothe, feed and house your family, this probably isn't the place for you. There are plenty of opportunities to be had in smaller communities. Of course it takes an investment to pick up and move, but it is a step forward in terms of emerging from poverty. There are more important things in life that surrounding yourself completely with like-minded individuals (i.e. the comfort zone). Step up and face the challenge like so many of us hard-working people do every day.

I totally agree with you. I just got separated from my husband about 6 months and was left with three beautiful kids that are my life but am barely making ends meet I had a two bedroom apartment that I paid $1300.00 but with the prices rising and my lease up this month I had to ask a friend to help me out and rent me a room in her apartment I am moving there know with my three kids to a one bedroom that I have to fit all three of us. I do have a good job and work hard to give my children some thing better but I have fallen and hope that I can get up I am afraid to go apply for section 8 because I feel that section 8 is like a lottery ticket it's 1 in a million that you might get the apartment. WHat should I do should I take a day off and go apply or just keep my day and pray to good that things get better.

<quoted text>Good luck, Ms. Pearson. I, too, wanted some help while going to school to be an RN. Too bad I owned a crappy car to get me back and forth -- no public transportation where I lived. I was denied the help because of owning that car. If you work and don't make much money -- forget it. Quit your job (or lie and say you don't have one) and list yourself to be put at the front of the line because of your overcrowded situation. Then write your congressmen and tell them how ludicrous our Section 8 program is when it doesn't help folks who want to work.

Again, consider leaving the New York area. This place is expensive, even in the outer boroughs. You could provide your children with much better housing in a less expensive city. New York is a really tough place, and people are being pushed out all the time because those with money are willing to pay more and more to either move here or stay here. Sounds harsh, but it's the reality.

Also, seek child support from your ex-husband if these are his children. Do not have any more children you cannot support. Focus on the ones you already have and make every effort to see to it that they acquire not only a high school education, but a college degree as well.

I feel it is much better to leave this city than to try and raise your children amongst the drugs, prostitution, violence, etc. that plague the housing projects of NY.

With the skyrocketing, out of control, over priced rents in today's New York, this will only help those who really need this type of assistance.

Listen, i allpied for section 8. It is not a lotery. If u really need it, the the city sees ur condition, then u will get it. I was living in my mothers basement with my 2 small kids, sharing a bathroom and kitchen, and i applied and within a year i got my voucher. So apply, what do u have to loose.

I totally agree that today's housing projects are some of the worst places to raise a family. Housing projects was originally designed as a way for working families to save money to buy a home because the rent is cheap and at the same time provide a home for a family. As a young child, My family lived in the projects until my parents saved enough money to buy a home, At that time ( 40+ years ago ) Housing projects had a different atmosphere from today's, there were working families, people cared and had pride where they lived, and there was no crime, drugs, gangs, violence, etc. that permeates today's housing projects. Between the 70's and the 80's, it changed for the worst, they lowered standards and requirements since there was an explosion of homelessness and fanilies in shelters got top priority for apartments in the projects. I now see projects as a dead end, not a hand up as it used to be because of the crime and violence that takes place there now.
Sec. 8 is a good program designed to help those who help themselves and aren't playing the system, those get weeded out quickly in the application process. Rents in NYC ARE VERY HIGH and some need the assistance since they don't posess the resources to move elsewhere and start fresh.

Section 8 falls within the black entitlement program of 'you gots to gives it toos me' or they may just 'act out'. What was intended to be a temporary residence has become a generational hand me down within family or sublet to strangers. Its fairly common when NYCHA comes to make repairs that they don't find the tenant of record but a 'cousin' minding the apartment who explains that Ms. Jones has gone to care for a sick relative out of state and should be returning soon. NYCHA only investigates when notified by welfare that they intend to stop payment on the apartment rent for whatever reason.

This must be an old blog because the section 8 has been re-Close and just in time because I was waiting for my section 8 voucher to be re-calculated and given back to me. Now I see myself headed right back to the shelter system because the children s advantage program is no longer paying my rent either. I was employed I am on unemployment and the working advantage program does not fit my criteria. So here I am looking for a apartment that accepts the FEPS program and I am running into landlords that aren't happy with any of the government programs for the same reason. If any one know of how I can get my voucher back or a apartment that accepts FEPS please reply
