Our Veterans deserve better than this!!! The VA and the people who worked with this Veteran should hang their head in shame.

I sincerely hope that since this has come to light that the VA in Hampton is changing the way they handle Veteran's medical issues, both physical and mental.

As a friend of the Washabaughs, thank you for doing this story. Chip was a wonderful man and deserved better care than he received. I hope something good can come of this; hopefully, changes in the way the VA takes care of their patients and their visitation policy. All veterans deserve better.

After reading this article for 3 times, I am so disgusted, mad and upset. Chip was a wonderful person and did not deserve this. He should have had a long life in front of him with Nancy. I will never let my husband go to the VA hospital. It is really sad when someone defends out country, puts their lives on the line each day, and this is how they are treated when they are home. I hope and pray that drastic changes can be made so no other veteran and their family has to go through something like this. The VA and staff should not only hang their head in shame, they should also be held accountable for their negligent actions!

This horrific story of the death of a Vietnam decorated combat Vet is truly a needless tragedy,,,The VA will be held accountable as referrals can be made to state , local and federal licensing boards,JACHO and to our VA Senators........The VA motto is to care for those who have borne the battle,,,,,,,,,,,As veterans we must stand and be counted and hold this VA institution accountable for the care or lack of care for our Veterans .............Pls accept my deepest condolences,,,Jan,,,,,WE WILL NEVER FORGET

As a retired, after 50 years, RN, I am appalled that this continues to happen in the VA system. It is happening nation wide, not just in VA. Check the statistics in the other VA hospitals and check with the nurses retired from them or the patients who were in the units.

I agree with Bauer and all,,the system is designed to protect itself or CYA,,,,,,,,,,,,Not to care for those who have borne the battle and their widows and orphans as our great president Abe Lincoln mandated to the Veterans Administration......

The rest of this story should be told on how the VA regional office had processed any claims to protect this veteran and his benefits.
