People get in it for the money. They lie, cheat and steal to pass and graduate. Then, after 6 months of nursing, they realize. They hate the jobs, hate the patients, hate the medical group/hospital they are working for.

Wow, Ellen, good morning to you, too. As a nurse, I will say the first two statements are correct... to a point. You could make that comment about each and every profession in the land. Yes, it does take someone special to be a nurse. The fact that healthcare is a business - to make money - will tarnish even the purest soul. Understaffed situations do not make for good quality patient care. The paper work will bog you down, the nasty patients who feel they are "entitled" to your every minute even when the patient next to them is having chest pain will infuriate you. The doctors who yell at you for their mistakes or hang up on you, throw charts at you will make you think twice about what you just got into. The special nurses look past these items as mere imperfections in an imperfect world and take charge of those in their care as if they were beloved family members. I am proud to be a nurse, my daughter is a nurse and I encourage others to look in themselves for the special qualities to become nurses.

My friend had surgery 1 month ago at Plantation General. When she woke up she was given the wrong medication.
She rang the buzzer for the nurse who came a half hour later and told her there were just not enough people on duty to take care of her.

Sure, it's not the nurse's fault that they are short handed, but telling a post op patient that there will be no help for her after giving her the wrong medication is terrifying and quite serious. The nurse was actually mad at the patient because the staff was short handed.

Later, she gave her an injection while leaving the syringe with the cap off on the bed.

All the things that they did wrong were circumvented by the woman's mother he was at her bedside, later, who happens to be a nurse and knew the proper procedures.

I feel sorry for people who have no family at the beside to insure that the staff doesn't abuse or neglect them.

I am in nursing school right now nad have one way or the other been involved in Health Care for the last 35 years.
I have worked in the ER for the last 6yrs and now am seeing the "otherside"
of life from the floor as a student.
I also am trully appalled at the flagrant attidute of some of the nurses, and applaude the rest.
I have worked with both and don't judge the bad with the good.
Unfortunatley as with all professions, you have both. I hope to be in the "good" category as I am not going into this for the money. At my age it goes way deeper than that and I hope my work ethics reflect that in the years to come.
And you are so right when you say that people without other family or friends with them are vulneralble to the nurses who are just not good at what they do or have the attitude that everyone is expendable as a patient.
That is why it is so very important to ask questions about your care as a patient. This is your life and body and your right as a patient to inquire and question treatment.
I hope you will remember that there are still a few good ones out there who do care and that some of us are hoping to become the best concerned nurses that we can be. I know I will be one of them.

as a nurse...( who no longer has to work...and glad to be out of the force)....let me tell you this...

NURSES...ARE THE BIGGEST BUNCH OF BACKSTABBING BITCHES I HAVE EVER WORKED WITH!!!
And ya'll can deny it if you want, but you know I am telling it like it is!! Nurses lie on each other, set each other up, set traps for one another, backstab each other for promotions and acknowledgment....eveyday at work in Nursing, is like swimming with Piranhas!!
What they need to do, is give a grant for some psychological screening for the applicants and instructors!!

Again, I agree with comments. Not all people are "good". I wish Hospitals and the corporations that run them would see that customer service is more than three hots and a cot. The nurses need to be able to deliver CARE. If they are incapable of doing so - the patient suffers and sometimes dies. My Dad, after several shifts of good nurses, died due to the neglegence of one bad one. She didn't communicate with the doctor and then altered the record. Yup, right here in East Ft. Lauderdale. By all means - room in with your family/friend patient. The dangerous actions of the nurse at Plantation needs to be reported in writing to their Administrator. Yes, they do take this seriously - word of mouth is their best advertisement!

Psychological testing for nurses is a good idea.

Also, some people with addictions get into nursing for free access to free drugs.

They need to do drug testing, unannounced and frequently.

I have only worked with two nurses in my 26 yr career in Nursing, that were drug addicts...the bigger problem in nursing is Alcohalics....the field is full of them!
And about nurses not taking care of patients....how can they take care of the ill...if they cannot take care of each other? the capacity to care must be there....in most ...it is not.

Psychologic testing for ALL Medical professionals is a great idea, so is drug testing. This goes for nurses, physical therapists, all doctors, pharmacists, etc. Anyone in the healthcare profession that has access to drugs and those who can cause harm to others.

I work in a east FTL hospital and their mantra is a any body is better than no body. Hire to fill the position!!!

I happen to know some very good nurses and praise the work they do. Especially in our over crowded ER's. od bless you~! But there are still the bad seeds.

Well, my mom was treated in the emergency room in North Broward Hospital and the nurses gave us the best attention we have ever received. They were very nice to us and they felt compassion for what my mom had at that moment.

I don't know what the starting rate for a LVN, I think u mean LPN, in ant case why don't u go for the RN. the starting pay in PA is 25-29/hr. Fresh out og nursing school.

In Ca they are called L.V.N's,i know weird huh,it sounds weird to me saying LPN.Well I start the LVN program in Jan,and its a year long.after i get done,im going for my R.N,I know R.N's make good money and why stop at the LVN when there are so many areas of nursing to get into.Im so exited!L.V.N's on the average start out at about 16 per hr here,and RN's are about28 per hr,depending where you work.

I work at a skilled nursing facility as an LPN. My employer random drug tested me, urinalysis. I passed. She then ordered a blood drug screen. Anyone else ever had this happen? Why would they need both tests? I have never used drugs or been accused of using so I don't understand.

I became a nurse like 20 yrs ago and i always liked it, till the last few yrs. there is so much bull to put up with, it became a burden to me. you not only have managemant that is baggering you, but co workers that you can't trust. Its easy for them to grin in your face and not mean it. If your a sensitive kind of person you can't make it being a nurse. it will tear you down. so i went and retired, best decision I ever made. no more stress.
