Nursing diploma VS degree?

I'm currently 22 and would like to become a nurse in Canada, my question is pretty simple.... what's the difference between nursing diploma and degree? Is nursing diploma enough to become registered nurse? I know diploma is 2 years while degree is 4, but why would I study for 4 years instead of 2? What difference will it make?
Just to be clear, I'm not being lazy or anything.. I don't mind studying for 4 years, I just don't wanna do it if it's not worth it, cause it's a lot of time and money.
